FYI: In 1977 Art Ensemble of Chicago trumpeter Lester Bowie traveled to Nigeria and played with Fela for several months, which he recounts, vividly, here: http://arthurmag.com/2009/11/02/lester-bowie-on-fela-kuti-1999/
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 7:18pm Gary:

Thanks for that link, Richard -- definitely going to go read after the show

  Wed. 10/28/15 7:33pm Jill B.:

Gary, this is as great as you said it would be!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 7:34pm Gary:

Good question, RevRab ... Ginger Baker played with him in 71, if that's any indication, but I'm not sure it is ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 7:35pm Gary:

Toldya, Mom!
Avatar Wed. 10/28/15 7:35pm hyde:

Hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 7:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So - maybe Jazz musicians &/or people already knowledgeable about Africa knew about him...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 7:37pm Gary:

I think by the end of the 70s he was known around the world, but not sure about early / mid 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 7:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

1965 - geez.
Avatar Wed. 10/28/15 7:47pm ndbob:

indeed Gary - the Badlands are great!
Avatar Wed. 10/28/15 7:48pm hyde:

I got the chance to see Fela in the 80's, maybe 1986? (like when he was here for the Amnesty International show at Giants Stadium). He played in this smallish place in Boston (which I think was mostly a dance club, I never saw anything else there). Mostly I remember how he kept complaining that the stage was so small that he couldn't even dance, which was obviously REALLY cramping his style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 7:51pm Gary:

Wow, so lucky, Hyde!
Avatar Wed. 10/28/15 7:59pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary! catch the rest on the archive

Night, Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 8:00pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...just seems like - consider where Miles Davis was trying o get to in the early 70s - & here's this - singular & fully-formed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 8:03pm Gary:

And, too, SO MANY albums in that period: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Wed. 10/28/15 8:18pm hyde:

Remain in Light--I saw that tour, too. That was pretty spectacular live, honestly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 8:25pm steve:

ohh man markin my calendar for next week
  Wed. 10/28/15 8:31pm Richard:

P.S. re Lester B.: He also recorded with Fela that year, soloing on two tracks, "No Agreement" and "Dog Eat Dog."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 8:33pm listener james from westwood:

fun stuff through the halfway mark!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 8:46pm Gary:

If you're listening in headphones, you can hear the back & forth between guitarists Segun Edo and Tutu Shorunmu
  Wed. 10/28/15 8:46pm Ryan J:

Diggin' it while building theater sets. Glad you made it home in one piece!

Avatar Wed. 10/28/15 9:44pm Peter Nelson:

Hey Gary and everyone. Just tuned in.....late night 'cos of a Godspeed You! gig (which was disappointing...the support was better). Hurrah for Fela!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:45pm Īke:

Oh dang, looks like I've been missing a great show. I'll have to hit the archives for the bulk of this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:45pm Gary:

Howdy, Peter and NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:45pm Gary:

Iiike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:48pm Uncle Michael:

I'm late because the mrs. and I were watching an episode of Dalziel & Pascoe. Only Peter will get the reference...or know how to pronounce Dalziel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:50pm Gary:

You're right ... I haven't heard of it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:51pm Uncle Michael:

Just one of those Brit cop shows I torrent. We keep binging through them and needing new-old fixes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:54pm Īke:

Sometimes I think my dad doesn't watch anything BUT British cop shows and period pieces. I've given up recommending anything else to him. That said, he recommended Happy Valley to me and it's surprisingly gripping and suspenseful. Oddly though, he won't watch Ripper Street. Maybe because the title makes it sound like a horror show, but it's just a British period piece/cop show, so it should be right up his alley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:55pm Uncle Michael:

I like period cop shows. Fortunately, nineties shows are now period shows. Happy Valley is on my list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:56pm Gary:

I really liked Luther
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:56pm Uncle Michael:

I don't spend much time listening to the archives but this show is going to get me through three hours one day soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:57pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know Luther. I'll wiki it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:57pm Gary:

It's a BBC (I think) cop show, but not period, it's contemporary
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:57pm Īke:

IMHO each season of Luther is lamer than the last one. Brilliant actors, questionable scripts. Season 1 was solid, S2 kind of disappointing, S3 totally bogus. Your mileage may vary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:58pm Gary:

Up last, Fela's first record
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/28/15 9:58pm Uncle Michael:

We ran through all of Inspector Morse, most recently.
