Richard:
FYI: In 1977 Art Ensemble of Chicago trumpeter Lester Bowie traveled to Nigeria and played with Fela for several months, which he recounts, vividly, here: http://arthurmag.com/2009/11/02/lester-bowie-on-fela-kuti-1999/

![]() Thanks for that link, Richard -- definitely going to go read after the show |

![]() Good question, RevRab ... Ginger Baker played with him in 71, if that's any indication, but I'm not sure it is ... |

![]() |
![]() So - maybe Jazz musicians &/or people already knowledgeable about Africa knew about him... |
![]() |
![]() I think by the end of the 70s he was known around the world, but not sure about early / mid 70s |

I got the chance to see Fela in the 80's, maybe 1986? (like when he was here for the Amnesty International show at Giants Stadium). He played in this smallish place in Boston (which I think was mostly a dance club, I never saw anything else there). Mostly I remember how he kept complaining that the stage was so small that he couldn't even dance, which was obviously REALLY cramping his style. |

![]() Wow, so lucky, Hyde! |

P.S. re Lester B.: He also recorded with Fela that year, soloing on two tracks, "No Agreement" and "Dog Eat Dog."

Hey Gary and everyone. Just tuned in.....late night 'cos of a Godspeed You! gig (which was disappointing...the support was better). Hurrah for Fela! |
![]() |
![]() Oh dang, looks like I've been missing a great show. I'll have to hit the archives for the bulk of this one. |
![]() |
![]() Howdy, Peter and NGH! |
![]() |
![]() Iiike! |
![]() |
![]() I'm late because the mrs. and I were watching an episode of Dalziel & Pascoe. Only Peter will get the reference...or know how to pronounce Dalziel. |
![]() |
![]() You're right ... I haven't heard of it! |
![]() |
![]() Just one of those Brit cop shows I torrent. We keep binging through them and needing new-old fixes. |
![]() |
![]() Sometimes I think my dad doesn't watch anything BUT British cop shows and period pieces. I've given up recommending anything else to him. That said, he recommended Happy Valley to me and it's surprisingly gripping and suspenseful. Oddly though, he won't watch Ripper Street. Maybe because the title makes it sound like a horror show, but it's just a British period piece/cop show, so it should be right up his alley. |
![]() |
![]() I like period cop shows. Fortunately, nineties shows are now period shows. Happy Valley is on my list. |
![]() |
![]() I really liked Luther |
![]() |
![]() I don't spend much time listening to the archives but this show is going to get me through three hours one day soon. |
![]() |
![]() I don't know Luther. I'll wiki it! |
![]() |
![]() It's a BBC (I think) cop show, but not period, it's contemporary |
![]() |
![]() IMHO each season of Luther is lamer than the last one. Brilliant actors, questionable scripts. Season 1 was solid, S2 kind of disappointing, S3 totally bogus. Your mileage may vary. |
