psyched for this one. I've only grabbed the first couple of these volumes from Scavenged Luxury in the past. It took me so long to getting around to digesting them I haven't gone back. Probably should do that now....

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 7:35pm Gary:

Jesse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 7:36pm listener james from westwood:

I see from Wikipedia that New Wave Theater was shown occasionally on Night Flight, which means I likely saw some segments here and there. Also shows that The Plugz appeared on NWT, which also pleases me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 7:38pm listener james from westwood:

The NWT entry itself also adds more evidence to the already existing mountain of evidence that (a) Harold Ramis was a mensch and (b) Chevy Chase is an asshole.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 7:39pm glenn:

chevy chase is indeed an asshole and a douche.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 7:40pm listener james from westwood:

Hmm, lemme see, Glenn ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 7:51pm Gary:

Was Gina X LA-based, Glenn? I don't know anything about her/them, and nothing's showing up in my music files ...

Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:16pm hyde:

@doca ooh, i want to see that flick
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:18pm hyde:

I mostly remember Alice Bag from The Decline of Western Civilization
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:18pm schmutz:

@jesse seriously missing JP! lived by Forest Hills for several years (Cambridge now). Hope to end up there again someday!
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:19pm doca:

@hyde: It's very interesting. I'm noticing I'll need a few days to digest it, which is good. There's an Apichatpong Weerasethakul feel to it, which means it's on the right track of cinema for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:19pm Uncle Michael:

An old friend of mine is the editor on The Decline of Western Civilization III. She just posted today on FB that it's coming out on DVD...after 13 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:20pm listener james from westwood:

Criminally I have only seen part of one of the Declines (II). But I did see all of "Urgh! A Music War" when FMU played it between documentaries at one of the Record Fairs.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:21pm Jesse K:

@schmutz, I go to cambridge everyday! To be fair though, wfmu lives everywhere.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:21pm Holly in NC:

@hyde - Alice Bag's autobiography (Violence Girl) is really good!
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:22pm hyde:

@doca that works for me too!

@UM even crazier is that Decline II The Metal Years has never come out on DVD in the US, near as I can tell. Came out on VHS, but that's it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:23pm Gary:

@Michael -- that's awesome!
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:23pm hyde:

@Holly cool. I'll have to check that out next time I'm in music bio reading mode....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:24pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:27pm Gary:

Sushi was pretty exotic in 1982
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:29pm coelacanth:

as were cell ("mobile") phones.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:30pm coelacanth:

(...or were you just referring to the song?!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:30pm Gary:

LOL, yes.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:30pm hyde:

@Gary yeah, though sushi had really been in LA since the 60's. That was the key place it got its start in the US.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:31pm hyde:

oh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:31pm Gary:

Is that true? I had no idea, Hyde -- I honestly thought of it as an 80s thing, maybe because I was in San Francisco then

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:32pm Uncle Michael:

I was eating sushi in Colorado in the late '70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:33pm Gary:

Dang. How could I be so misinformed? I even read that book, The Story of Sushi. :(
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:36pm hyde:

@Gary yeah, that guy who invented the california roll--Mashita?--was the sushi chef at Tokyo Kaikan in LA in the 60's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:36pm davex:

Hey, Gary and everyone!
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:37pm coelacanth:

as a child i'd heard rumours that the japanese ate their fish raw. we thought that was ultra weird, but my mother then ate raw hamburger -and milkbone dog biscuits,to prove SOMEthing... and we decided the japanese weren't that weird!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:37pm Gary:

Dave!
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:37pm hyde:

I love this weird Neil Young
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:38pm Gary:

I am embarrassed to admit that I had never heard that Neil Young song until last week.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:38pm hyde:

@coelacanth that's hilarious
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:38pm Uncle Michael:

Way before I ever heard of sushi we had sashimi at Kiyo's in Chacago as early as 1968.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:39pm hyde:

@Gary that whole record (Trans) is totally and kind of awesomely bizarre
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:40pm Gary:

He really sounds like an outsider musician, like maybe Space Lady's brother or something
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:40pm coelacanth:

hyde, right?...i think it's much more risky to eat raw beef now.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:43pm hyde:

@Gary heh, yep. there's reasons David Geffen sued him for that stuff as being intentionally noncommercial
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:44pm coelacanth:

i think lots of folks gave up on Mr.Young for a while,in the 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:46pm Uncle Michael:

Sashimi in the '60s in Chicago. Sushi in Colorado not as early...turns out the place didn't open till '82. I thought it was there by '78 or '79...but no.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:47pm Gary:

Aha
  Wed. 2/11/15 8:50pm Poodlecannon:

What an awesome set. I loved the Vivabeat song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:50pm Gary:

Wait, Geffen really sued him for that stuff? That's ... wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 8:53pm Gary:

I cannot recommend this brilliant album by Gary Panter highly enough.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 8:53pm coelacanth:

that's like suing your spouse because heshe got a tattoo.

you're right, Gary, Polarity is from What Makes a Man Start Fires.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 9:09pm coelacanth:

i bought that hilary 12" when it came out. then her album; and the album is not even slightly "racey" like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 9:12pm Gary:

Bummer, Coel -- such promise!
  Wed. 2/11/15 9:13pm Jesse k:

I love Carl Stone and this is a great track

I need more Carl Stone in my life -- this thing totally blows me away
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 9:15pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 9:16pm Gary:

Do we play the 7:00-long Fishbone song next set, or just assume everyone has heard it -- we've still got to get through 1985, 86 and 87!
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 9:23pm coelacanth:

i just looked into hilary,& i guess it's an ep i have? (i'm not home-can't check) but i should give it another chance, from a different perspective now. the description looks interesting;though fairly serious.
i wasn't looking for that,in that,then.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 9:23pm hyde:

personally, I don't care if you skip Fishbone
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 9:24pm davex:

Hey alternate between what you think are hits and obscure. That would be interesting.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 9:25pm coelacanth:

i don't think i've heard that. i've never been intrigued by fishbone...but i'm still open.
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 9:25pm northguineahills:

Gee, I saw fishbone at the 93 lolapalooza. That was a whilel back. (the first concert I went to by myself w/ non-local bands.

Gotta run, thanks for the excellent tunes tonight Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 9:28pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 9:29pm Gary:

I'm definitely not going to do another talk-over break; that'll gain us a few minutes, anyway
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 9:31pm coelacanth:

i saw them at the first(?) further fest ('97?) & totally dug it. then my lady (then) gave me tapes of fishbone, and i never played them more than once or twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/11/15 9:34pm Gary:

I think I have a compromise -- might play something of theirs from 87 at the end of the show
Avatar Wed. 2/11/15 9:47pm coelacanth:
