Options August 27, 2014: The Perfect Pop Song?
DID YOU KNOW? Scientists have created what they’re calling the “perfect pop song” by using “natural selection.” But in a perfect world, the perfect pop song could be anything -- from Disco Dandia and Polish guitar shredding to Atlanta DIY and Italian avant-garde. In fact, every perfect pop song would share but one important thing in common with all other examples: They would each be precisely -- not a second more or less than -- three minutes long. So pop! Such perfect!

Is this your Oulipian constraint show? Have you calculated your commentary?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 7:05pm Gary:

So Glenn! So Bowery Bum! Such calculation, yes, but scare!

@glenn - you're welcome!
Evening ndbob!

Los Saicos, yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 7:09pm Gary:

FIRST FUCKUP ALERT: A couple of seconds are being snipped off of each song during the cross-fade. Are they still "perfect"? Such ask!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 7:09pm listener james from westwood:

Whoo! Sorry I'm late! Friend called me to ask about buying health insurance. (I had bought it well before the ACA, so I've somehow become my gang's "expert" on the subject. Yes, that horrifies me too.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 7:10pm Gary:

James-James! Hat! Glasses! Pop!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 7:17pm listener james from westwood:

No idea if it's any easier now. I do know that at minimum, using healthcare.gov will list which insurance co's serve NJ. I certainly had no clue before I began Googling! (My prev. employer's insurer was based in CA, and, after my layoff, tried to hike rates like 30%. This was when the ACA was taking form in Congress and sent as "good" a message as all those car execs flying their private jets into DC to beg for money.)
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 7:17pm Holly in NC:

@glenn - s'ok. I've not signed up, won't sign up, can't afford premiums & don't want to be thrown onto the medicaid bus where my home would be at risk. Until we get real (& affordable & non-punitive) single payer I will continue using our local sliding scale clinic for planned needs, and stupid $250 urgent care for unplanned :-(

i don't know what happened to the idea to donate Kim's Video stuff, can't find much about it out there. The success of the Scarecrow Video Kickstarter recently was pretty heartening, though...
  Wed. 8/27/14 7:27pm Bowery bum:

Gary, when I used to drive my 18-wheeler cross country, the company didn't give us time for bio-breaks, so I used a soda bottle. It was important however to look before drinking the ginger ale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 7:29pm listener james from westwood:

ndbob, I recently learned that FDR pressed for a better system than what we ended up with. It was demonized by the AMA and his era's equivalent of the teabaggers. They weren't willing to give him anything more than Social Security or the other New Deal programs that made it thru that era.
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 7:32pm ndbob:

@hyde I used to go to Scarecrow Video when I lived in Seattle
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 7:35pm Gary:

I guess no one else is having the problem I am
  Wed. 8/27/14 7:54pm Bowery bum:

I had a problem with VERY LARGE TYPE in this area of the screen. It kept getting bigger and bigger until I couldn't read or write... Like a 50s horror movie. I rebooted and it was ok but when I went to confirm this note, it came back SOOO BIG
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 7:55pm ndbob:

almost time to go - and since i can't get any response there's no point in staying anyway - I will listen from the archive from the beginning and hopefully hear what I'm supposed to hear
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 7:56pm Holly in NC:

@Bowery Bum - It looks like you're listening via phone, which limits archive access to the 5 most recent shows of every show currently on schedule. If you access through computer, ndbob's link gets you to *everything* from at least 2000-on, I think earlier, including shows NOT currently on schedule. So yeah, everything. AMAZING AWESOME ETC ETC
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 7:58pm Holly in NC:

Aw, Jill B, you are such a great mom to Gary! Things OK here, still have not made your cioppinno though...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 7:58pm Gary:

Is anyone else having issues like Bob, with different music playing from what's on the playlist? Should be Babla Orchestra now
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 7:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

No probs for me w/ iTunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 7:59pm listener james from westwood:

Haven't been looking as closely at the "now playing" vs the playlist, but I can say the stream's been solid; was a bit skippy yesterday during Tony's show.

  Wed. 8/27/14 8:08pm Jill B.:

Holly.....you really must (when you are able) make the cioppino. It is a my wonderful daughter-in-law's recipe and pretty easy to put togehter. Whatever you do, do not forget the wine!!!!!

Tonight we are off to pick up a bake at home pizza......just had a pedicure, thanks to a friend's birthday present to me.....so no cooking tonight.........forgot to thaw anything out earlier today.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 8:14pm Gary:

Hyde there was a second 3:00 song on it that I almost played as well, but I thought it would just be "wrong" to play two songs from the same comp ... but, god it's great, yeah
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:14pm Holly in NC:

@Jill B - oh, I would never, ever forget the wine ;-0
Breakfast this am = dandelion greens, mache, & arugula (sounds healthy so far, right?) plus some crumbled crispy pork belly [aka uncured/unsmoked bacon, aka chicharrones] & an egg, finished with the egg-frying butter deglazed with a big glug of sherry. Yes I went there, and it was good :-)
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:16pm hyde:

@Holly i ate dinner an hour ago and you are making me soooo hungry

Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:21pm cosmic matrix:

@holly - that sounds tasty. glad your pork belly worked out! i made some in a toaster oven on my deck when it was too hot to cook inside...it was OK, better on the BBQ. both ways braised over onions, carrots and scallions....w/ beer and brown sugar.

@cosmic matrix - nexy time I will braise, this time I was in a hurry and went the "bacony" route. Your way sounds amazing, though I would have to axe the sugar & switch out other alcohol for beer.

@Gary - I am SO happy someone else truly enjoys doge speak. Or rather: Such happy. Much wow. So love!

(I suspect everyone else is exasperated, sorry)

Miss PSS! PSS, are you out there?
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:30pm hyde:

@cosmic matrix i always make this rosemary rice krispies treats recipe--it's really good! articles.latimes.com...
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:30pm cosmic matrix:

@holly - it is amazing what one finds when one searches youtube for pork belly cooking instructions. every culture does it somewhat differently...but every recipe is so fucking involved and insane...most invove violent stabbing or ritualistic slicing and then soaking it in some obscure liquid or chemical combination (condensed milk, baking soda, gasoline etc)... i always like watching cooking videos in other languages. you sound nice and your cat is cute. have a good night, gotta make them treats. gonna listen downstairs!
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:32pm hyde:

yeah, longing for the past is dust to digital.
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:32pm cosmic matrix:

@hyde - ummm, it's probably good but how arbitrary! couldn't you do it with any spice? or is it so amazing. you must like rosemary. my regular breakfast lately is a rosemary/sea-salt bagel from myer's bagels in burlington.....montreal style!
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:34pm cosmic matrix:

@ hyde - and your cat is a cute too. but did it lose an eye?
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:36pm hyde:

@cosmic matrix the thing is, it's not really overpoweringly rosemary-ish. you can taste it, but i think it works with the vanilla and gets sort of muted. i've thought of trying it with a thyme/orange zest combo, but haven't yet.

and yep, my cat is a shelter kitty who got an infection before she got picked up and only has one eye with about 50% vision in it. but it doesn't really slow her down that much...
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:40pm northguineahills:

I do put liberal doses of rosemary/chili powder (Nigerian)/cumin/curry for my brunch taters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 8:42pm Gary:

NGH! Such pop in!
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 8:44pm Holly in NC:

@cosmic matrix - Bitty says thank you, but she does not self-identify as "cute". As ruler of 2 humans and 2 other cats, she prefers to identify as regal.

(covering her ears) Most apt descripitions = flirtatious, coquette, vixen, avid hunter, and well, b*tchy. As well as wildly loving, possessive & affectionate. And, indeed, cute.

@hyde! Must share with you crazy good rosemary corncake recipe from a 198x issue of Food & Wine, it's not on line & I'm not at home to type in. A really, really, good recipe. @ngh you would like also, I think

Heh, TOC = table of contents to this editor, too!

Such while!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:23pm Gary:

So, Holly, my first encounter with "such [something]" was in Casablanca.

GUY 1: What watch?
GUY 2: [Can't remember what he says, but like 2:00 PM or something]
GUY 1: Such watch!

Gary, listening to you on pop up & efd on mp3 is getting really trippy. And I did have to turn you down to zero during efd playing Beastie Boys' "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" because that I need to sing along with, at the top of my lungs ;-)

I just bought that 33 1/3 book about Paul's Boutique
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 9:28pm northguineahills:

@hyde: Those are fun!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:29pm Gary:

I just finished the 33-1/3 on Exile in Guyville
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 9:29pm hyde:

@ngh this is the first one I have, but there's a bunch of others that look promising.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:31pm Uncle Michael:

Gary, that's why I asked about the Leuchtags.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:32pm Gary:

Franklin Bruno on Elvis Costello is great. Also the book on Public Enemy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:33pm Uncle Michael:

A friend of mine wrote the 33 1/3 for Exile on Main Street
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 9:34pm Holly in NC:

@Gary - I still have not seen Casablanca all the way through, in one sitting. How awful is that?

@Hyde - How's the book? Truly is one of my top 10 albums, and I'm not a carpetbagger. All hail my friend Tyler for forcing me to listen back in '89.

@Gary again - that's another album I know by heart, but it hasn't stayed with me the same way Paul's Boutique has. That said, I need to dust it off & give it a listen. For a long time I just could NOT listen to "Divorce Song". Because my ex and I discovered the album at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:34pm Gary:

I wanna read that one, Michael
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 9:35pm cosmic matrix:

i believe i may have seen alice donut at CBGB or the continental or something!

....made my RKTs. didn't have a measuring cup, but everything worked out OK, THANK GOD.

lydia hiby told me my cat considers herself a princess.

...and i can see how rosemary and vanilla would complement one another!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:35pm Uncle Michael:

Bill Janovitz wrote it. I have it around here somewhere...
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 9:35pm Holly in NC:

If I ever win a lottery I will buy every 33 1/3.
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 9:35pm hyde:

I'd like to read the PE one.and the Slint one. and UM's pal's one.

@Holly, I haven't started it yet. It's in *gasp*...THE PILE.

Now I'm wondering what LP in my collection I would want to write one on...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:36pm Ike:

Hey, no spoilers! I'm three or four New Yorkers behind. Although honestly, I think others have already spoiled that one for me.
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 9:37pm hyde:

@UM ohhhh, it's Bill Janovitz. I used to see Buffalo Tom a lot in Boston.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:38pm Uncle Michael:

Bill wrote a much bigger Rolling Stones book that came out last year...soft cover came out this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:41pm Gary:

Oh, shoot -- sorry, Ike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:47pm Ike:

That's OK, I strategically tuned away and back again very deftly. I'm very impressed w/myself. Ha ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:53pm Ike:

What's the funniest and/or most eloquent thing you've ever read about PACKING and MOVING? I am trying to impress an gorgeous lady who is moving soon (fortunately not moving away from NYC though).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:55pm Gary:

Wow, that's a tough one, Ike
Avatar Wed. 8/27/14 9:55pm Holly in NC:

@Hyde - that's a very interesting question!
Oddly, I don't think anyone's done any 1 of the Stooges 3 canonical albums yet, or any Iggy solo, which really might be more interesting. Zombie Birdhouse or New Values or Soldier.

But tonight I'm thinking Robyn H - either I Often Dream of Trains or Gotta let This Hen Out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:57pm Ike:

Maybe I have set the bar too high for myself. Maybe I can find a way to have a conversation and be interesting without any emergency backup material... yeah RIGHT. Pfffft.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:58pm Gary:

Just relax and be such!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 8/27/14 9:59pm Uncle Michael:

I'm just thinking of Louden Wainwright III's song "Cardboard Boxes."

@Holly a lot of key ones are done, but there seems room for plenty more.

Thanks Gary!
