It is time for a thread on traditional urbanism, or town planning 13th century style. I will dispel some myths of modern dis-urbanism.

Georg Janny (1864 - 1935) was an Austrian landscape painter and set designer for opera and theatre. You can tell how well he understands the concept of space and place, stage and set. Anyone of these would serve wonderfully as a model for a new neighborhood.

“A truly great intellect, and one recognized to be such by the common opinion of mankind, such as the intellect of Aristotle or of St. Thomas, of Newton or of Goethe, is one which takes a connected view of old and new, past and present, far and near.” — Cardinal John Henry Newman

We have the radio on as usual and normal programming has been suspended. Several times an hour there's info on what to do when you are in car in water. In every kind of disaster cars turn to death traps: snow, typhoon, landslide, earthquake, tsunami, etc.

In case anyone still doesn't have one of these, hands down the best thing for cooking if the grid fails you in an urban environment. Lightweight, ridiculously cheap, durable, also good for camping (not that you need it much in a rural environment where you can make a camp fire).

Earlier today I took out our emergency gas cassette type cooker, practiced making tortillas (a fancy name for fried flour and water bread). A huge hit with the Wrathlings! I have boxes of water and flour, spices, canned food, etc. just in case. Good to know we won't starve.

Is there a superhero whose power is to put small children in bed and to sleep in under 3 minutes? I might be him. Meanwhile rivers are already overflowing and the real rains haven't even started. We're on high ground though so we'll sleep through it as usual.

One of the strongest in living memory apparently. Luckily we are provisioned and prepared and the house smells heavenly because Mrs Wrath has potted all the garden herbs and brought them inside.

This book—and I am reading it slowly to let every paragraph sink in—will be canonical in the field of urbanism. Of this I am already certain.

“We are compelled today to acknowledge that the wisdom contained in the cities our ancestors built, in the patterns and approaches they developed over thousands of years, exceeds our capacity to fully understand.” — Strong Towns, Charles L. Marohn, Jr.

Augustus Pugin (1812-1858) was an architect and pioneer of the gothic revival style. Here is his St. Giles Roman Catholic Church, Cheadle, Staffordshire, England. Look how masterfully he creates levels for the eyes to rest on by off-centering this chapel...!

£35 000 for maintaining a piece of fancy greenwashing is an incredible waste of money. Just keeping trees would be far cheaper. But the biggest difference is in the cumulative cost benefits: a green wall will never pay for itself. A tree after 50 years of age is a money maker.

We think we have made progress with our parks and urban green spaces, but our ancestors had lush courtyards, back gardens, espaliered trees and most important of all, the open country starting just outside the town gates. means not letting urban sprawl suffocate us.

Autumn is a good time to plant fruit trees. An espaliered pear tree uses one square feet of land/bucket and produces maybe 10 pounds of fruit in a year. A cheap tree can be bought for $70, which means it will pay for itself after 2-3 harvests. Not a bad investment.

Power outages in California shows how dependent people are on the grid: "Folks that come home from work, can't even find a way to get into their garage. You've got people that can't even access water, or medical supplies." — Governor Gavin Newsom
