February 4, 2015: Poor But Sexy
Taking Agata Pyzik's brilliant book on neoliberalism, post-punk and the culture clashes between Eastern and Western Europe as our launching pad, we'll spin three hours of music from the Eastern end of the equation, including Albania, Bulgaria + the Czech Republic through Slovenia, Russia + Ukraine.
Oh, and Poland. Don't forget Poland.

![]() We went on a day trip to Montanegro and went through one of the last secured border checkpoints in the former Yugoslav Republics. That was weird. We sailed right through but the picked through every Croatian's car with a fine toothed comb. And this checkpoint was going away in just a few months. |

![]() Whoa, that is weird. When was this? |

Kurws, very close to the Polish word, kurwa, while although literally means whore, is used as a catch-all profanity (like shit of fuck in English) |
![]() |
![]() Oh, yes -- actually I forgot that I had read that about the band, that they're called, literally, "Whor" (if I've remembered correctly) |

northguineahills:
My knowledge of Slavic languages is rather minuscule, although I've read on the Hapsburg and Prussian Empires edicts on issuing surnames. In the areas of Poland under either of these empires, you would be issued a surname by the local bureaucrat, unless you paid a bribe. If you wanted a really nice name, (ie: goldman (even if you already were a goldsmith)), it would cost more. So, it is possible, but I don't know enough about the etymology of Polish to fully answer your question. |
![]() |
![]() Whoa, I had no idea you could buy your way into a better name |
![]() |
Wed. 2/4/15 9:20pm
northguineahills:
Well, at the time, unless you were aristocracy, you had no surname. |

...so it's possible that if those in control wanted to deal you a shitty hand they may insert an adjective like "filthy" or "un-fulfilling" into the word "whore",and name you that. |
![]() |
![]() Re: "The Leszczer's": An error by the band, or can you "legally" make plurals w/apostrophes in Polish? I was shocked and appalled to find that Dutch allows apostrophic pluralization, which in English is only done in (hideous and gross) error. |

@coelacanth: It did happen, although usually the insult was more subtle, and usually only applied to minorities (in order to get a bribe). |
