In figuring out what to do with this post, I was looking around Spotify, and it really opened my eyes to how times change. When these were posted, they either weren’t in the RYM database, or they had a few ratings. Now they have many, many ratings, and, not only that, are easily streamable on Spotify, among many other places. It’s that reality that has changed this site from one that writes about music to one that simply links to it, for better or worse. If you want more depth, you can read about many of these here.

The never-ending relocation from the Blogger site continues, this time with a few early posts that seemed out of place at the time, but now fit nicely in with what I’m listening to 6+ years later. 

Each of these records was actually submitted by different authors, although I don’t think any of these names is particularly esoteric by this site’s standards. It more speaks to what was happening around 2008, a point where people deep into other areas were taking a step into not only the classics of 80s and 90s techno, but looking at contemporary electronic music and genres as a field (no pun intended) worthy of much more attention and critical analysis.

I’ve long felt that people who were always there, and there from the beginning, saw this as dilettantism, as trend hopping, and, potentially, fragmenting and destructive to their scene. In the intervening years, I think that concern hasn’t come to pass. Indeed, it has worked the other way. More and more of what constitutes “outsider” or “experimental” music has incorporated beats and taken on a great deal of the austere techno aesthetic, with more than a few complaints being the result.

Regardless, each of these releases are somewhat of their time, but they’re good, and I think are worthy of a spin. Enjoy!
