Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:05am doctorjazz:

You're welcome, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:06am annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:08am Gary:

Hey there, Alex!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:09am Alex In Illinois:

Maybe I will listen to this show regularly, now that the Wednesday night TV shows have all ended for the season, and my wife gave me a portable speaker for my birthday.
  Fri. 6/3/16 9:09am Mr C:

A Friday curve ball. Singled to center though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:09am Gary:

Mr C! ... again, this woman was 24 years old when she recorded this gem
  Fri. 6/3/16 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

Happy birthday, Alex in Illinois!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:14am Brian in UK:

Hello Gary. I do pity Doug having to put up with that Southern food. Things he does for us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:15am Gary:

Brian! Some of the best food I've ever had in my life was in New Orleans!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:16am Gary:

Speaking of food -- I have to figure out a way to cook breakfast while DJing ... AND keep my cat from jumping into the fridge ... his favorite new hiding place ... :-0
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:16am Brian in UK:

Gary do not rub it in. More smoked crevettes anyone.
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 9:16am Jesse K:

Morning Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:17am Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:22am doctorjazz:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:23am Gary:

I dream of going back ...
  Fri. 6/3/16 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

It's my first time back in NOLA for 20 years. Here to do some mother-in-law ash sprinkling. As I was going through the TSA security screening, the x-ray machine lady asked what was in the hard case inside my duffel. "My mother-in-law." I calmly replied, suppressing a giggle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:27am listener james from westwood:

ooh, this "Superstar" is indeed amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:28am Gary:

I wish I could have seen TSA Lady's face!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:29am Gary:

@James, according to clicky stars, it's the most popular song every played on this show
  Fri. 6/3/16 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

She didn't bar an eye. I think they've seen their share of mothers-in-law.

This Superstar = stupendous!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:32am listener james from westwood:

Good gods, don't turn into a cryonics experiment, silly cat!
  Fri. 6/3/16 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

Co-host Ezra!
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 9:38am chromaphone:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:39am Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:41am listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:42am Brian in UK:

Next pod along from The Three Mustaphas Three.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:43am Ike:

I think I hear some Russian words but it doesn't sound like a Russian accent. (looks at playlist)
Oh obviously they're Ukrainian. Duh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:45am Gary:

Ike!
  Fri. 6/3/16 9:48am earriee:

Yeah, I'll echo chromaphone, here, as a very-occasional listener of late. And as fwiw friendly feedback.

Playlist and listen now links were more prominent and easy to find on the old site.

What's on today table is wayy at the bottom of the new one. And GTDS and other streems are buried beneath extra where do-I-click-again clicks.

Relying on browser bookmarks like never before..
  Fri. 6/3/16 9:48am earriee:

And hi. Hey!
June!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:49am listener james from westwood:

There was a page on the old site that had current and past/on-the-bench DJs that was very useful, but that doesn't seem to have come along to the new site. May have to hit archive.org & pull that page up for a bookmarking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:50am Gary:

Hey there, Earriee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:50am Ike:

@LJfW, you don't mean this, do you? wfmu.org...
  Fri. 6/3/16 9:54am earriee:

The ''Playing Today' table way at the bottom, I'd guess. That's what I was talking about, too. It was the first place I looked on the old site. It looks like it had its legs broken.
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 9:54am glenn:

jeeez b'y, that's a whole lotta bodega.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:55am Gary:

Glenn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:57am doctorjazz:

I find the Drummer emails the easiest way to get to shows, especially when there is a sub. GET THEE ON THE MAILING LIST!
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 9:57am glenn:

okay, doug's in new orleans. where's uncle mike?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 9:58am Gary:

@Glenn, I think Uncle Michael went to Chicago? Something to do with the Cubs, or baseball, I think. I don't know anything about baseball, so this is purely based on "evidence" from his FB page :)
  Fri. 6/3/16 9:59am earriee:

hey Glenn
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 10:00am George from Bristol UK:

Heh, that Burmese / Myanmar script is beautiful. Burmese / Myanmar script could be utilised as a musical notation for a group of American or European improvising musicians. I do that kind of thing.
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 10:00am glenn:

howdy, earrie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:01am Gary:

Howdy, George!
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 10:01am glenn:

i'd go watch the cubs. they good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:01am listener james from westwood:

@Ike: Yes! Thanks for the link.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:01am Lewis:

Hi Gary - it is a rare pleasure that I get to listen to your great show!

Hi, Gary! I'm here for the Bodegathon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:05am listener james from westwood:

Didn't Tribune Media just partly name itself after Jacques Dutronc?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:07am Alex In Illinois:

The Wedding Present
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:07am Alex In Illinois:

The band the Ukrainians were in was The Wedding Present
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:11am Gary:

Yes, thank you, Alex! And hi Lewis and Doca!
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 10:16am βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:21am listener james from westwood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:22am Mayuko:

Woohoo! Gary's Day and I'm off from work!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:23am Lewis:

oh never mind - there it is on Sound cloud...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:23am Gary:

Wasn't that incredible? It's a two-volume import from Taiwan and the last thing I bought from Kim's Video before it closed
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:23am Gary:

Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:24am melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:25am Lewis:

very cool! too bad about Kim's I picked up some great stuff at the columbia store oh so long ago...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:25am Gary:

Melinda and Coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:26am Gary:

Oh, yeah -- I forgot about that store at Columbia ... it's the Columbia bookstore now, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:29am Mayuko:

Now I'm even happier to have these music keeping me in good mood, since the bus I've been taking just got engine trouble and I'm stuck being thrown out on street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:29am melinda:

So there is a GTDR mailing list?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:30am Gary:

There is a mailing list, yes: drummer@wfmu.org if I'm not mistaken
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 10:31am βrian:

Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 10:32am βrian:

There's got to be a catch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:34am Lewis:

Amsterdam is definitely Harlem above 125th... at least to the east...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:35am Alex In Illinois:

I found a Moussa Doumbia record in a hole in the wall record shop in a Subway station in NYC once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:38am Brian in UK:

Gary, have you got a rubber hand stamp 'cause I need to go out and come back and the doorman checks everyone.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 10:41am Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 11:40am Alex In Illinois:

Wrigley Field is about 10 miles North East of my location. So if the weather is the same there as it is here, then Uncle Michael is having decent outdoor weather.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 11:42am Gary:

Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 11:43am Gary:

Thanks for that info!

Maybe if you play her tracks without ritual permission, the cosmic-spiritual accountability agents assign you a six-hour DJ shift.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 11:46am Gary:

Mmm, yes, with few restroom breaks, I can see that
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 11:49am coelacanth:

is there an "exotic" version of "in-a-gadda-da-vida"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 11:51am Gary:

Yes, I believe there is, and I'm blanking out on what country the one I think I remember having heard is from
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 11:52am Jesse K:

That Anita Mui was bliss, loved the melody lifted from "Nightingale."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:05pm Alex In Illinois:

Doug has played a version of in-a-gadda-da-vida form another country, and if I recall correctly, it also had the phasing done between the left and right channels done during the drum solo, so that when listened in mono mode, it gets that phasing effect--just like the original version.

Hola, Gary!
Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:09pm Rich in Washington:

That Sabbath instro cover reminds me - Sabbath is playing in my town - not across the river in Portland, mind you, but here in Vancouver Washington. I may go, if only to fulfill a teenage wish to be able to say 'I saw Sabbath last night, man!'.

Lucky you, Rich! I've always wanted to go across the river and see Vancouver, WA ... I go to Portland somewhat regularly
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:22pm Rich in Washington:

You should msg. me next time you're planning on coming to town. I can give you the ten minute tour of one of Vancouver's two or three cool things, then show you how we natives hightail it to Portland for cool stuff to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:23pm Gary:

Haw ... well, many of the Cambodian CDs I picked up in Portland have a Vancouver, WA address

I was hoping for a purple elephant and an effervescing gorilla. Oh well, can't have everything.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:25pm Gary:

How about a gorilla elephant? Or a purple effervescence?
  Fri. 6/3/16 12:26pm Doug Schulkind:

That'll do!

Fairport Convention ... wow
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:39pm Rich in Washington:

oh man. We briefly had this sweet cat who loved to play fetch with wrapped cough drops for some reason (maybe because they were always laying around the house).
When we'd get bored of her bringing the cough drop back to us and stop throwing it, she'd just go get on a chair or bed and bat them off, chase them to the floor, then repeat.
Sadly, she probably got zapped by coyotes, a common fate for our kitty pals up here.
  Fri. 6/3/16 12:41pm Marie:

@ Dean and Doug: Hee hee. I'm actually painting a kind of purple elephant (not painting an elephant purple). I think a lot of bad things have probably happened in Cleveland :>}
  Fri. 6/3/16 12:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of purple and Cleveland, do you remember back in the early '80s when Cleveland tried branding itself as "The Big Plum" to echo NYC's Big Apple moniker? What a joke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:45pm Gary:

Cincinnati Zoo, it was ... the gorilla :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:46pm Gary:

Whoa, really? The Big Plum? That's ... plum ... crazy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:47pm Rich in Washington:

The immediate area I live in, Hockinson Washington, used to be famous for prunes. They even crowned a prune queen every year.

Hola Gary! greetings from the holy city of LA
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:50pm Gary:

SeanG!
  Fri. 6/3/16 12:53pm Marie:

Yeah, maybe Cleveland should have went for "The Big Prune"--BTW, I have to admit that I love prunes! They have a bad name, hence the attempted rebranding to "dried plums."
Avatar Fri. 6/3/16 12:53pm chromaphone:

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that this is a worldwide top song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 12:54pm Gary:

LOL ... I DLed it from the amazing Music for Maniacs blog, Mr.. Fab, proprietor
  Fri. 6/3/16 12:54pm Dean:

The GPO publishes The Plum Book every four years to coincide with transitions in administrations. It enumerates the 8000+ noncompetitive appointment positions in the federal government. No Prune Book to my knowledge.

Gary almost forgot, Camden Market is worth a visit, bit touristy but might be worth a visit.
  Fri. 6/3/16 2:28pm Dean:

'76 was a very good year for records in London. Picked up the first Pistols single, and a Quadraphonic version of Absolute Elsewhere's "In Search of Ancient Gods," the latter used at Cheapo Cheapo. Alas, I missed Gryphon live at the Marquee. I remember walking into the Virgin store across from Hyde Park Corner. Blondie's first album was playing, first I'd heard it. Which is kind of weird, because that album came out very late in the year, and yet I was there in the middle of fall...

@Brian in UK: I don't know those. Should I?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 6/3/16 2:30pm Brian in UK:

@hyde recently read a book about the history of nutmeg and how the traders fought over it in the Far East.

@Dean I worked round the corner from that Virgin shop at the same time you were there.

  Fri. 6/3/16 2:35pm Dean:

Sorry I missed that Mankey record. The cover on discogs features a Music Plus price tag. At the time, I was working at Music Plus (a small chain run by refugees of the Wherehouse in the late '70s). And speaking of record stores, Greg Shaw's BOMP! (the label that released the Mankey record) was pretty cool.

I was in London in '76 with a tour, high school students attending theater. Gryphon played the night we left for Stratford or Bath or somewhere. A couple of waiters at the hotel where we stayed offered to drive me from the Marquee to the new accommodations if I wanted to hear the band. I *almost* took them up on it, but chickened out. I think the show was 50p. Later, in '84, I heard Richard Harvey give a recital at Wigmore Hall, a venue very different from the Marquee.
