Maybe 8:30? I dunno. At Secaucus now. NJ Transit totally screwed me today
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 8:02pm northguineahills:

I'm still at work, so, transit on Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/28/18 8:03pm melinda:

Hi Gary and friends
  Wed. 2/28/18 8:16pm Gary:

Hi everyone! Two stops away
  Wed. 2/28/18 8:19pm Gary:

And the MTA is screwing me today as well — stalled here after “an earlier incident.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/28/18 8:22pm Uncle Michael:

I want to tell everyone here...surely people that are interested in music as an expression of culture and the intersection of cultures and the fusion of cultures...that if you view food similarly, you should be watching David Chang's "Ugly Delicious" on Netflix. It's a delight.
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 8:22pm coelacanth∅:

Gary, you're playing some badass blues harp music right now, in case you'd wondered.
  Wed. 2/28/18 8:23pm still b/p:

You CAN hit the can, take a breath and grab quick victuals before transmission.
  Wed. 2/28/18 8:26pm still b/p:

“I’m on my way...”
  Wed. 2/28/18 8:29pm Gary:

Literally sitting here two stops away, No freaking clue what’s going on — I’ll let you know when start moving
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/28/18 8:30pm cklequ:

And here i am thinking i was late.
  Wed. 2/28/18 8:31pm Gary:

Nope, I’m basically being held hostage by the two worst transit systems in the country
  Wed. 2/28/18 8:32pm Gary:

Moving! Should I get out next stop and can it one station?
  Wed. 2/28/18 8:35pm still b/p:

Bust a move off train, sneak a cling-ride on back of a trolley.
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 8:36pm n∅ expert:

i'm no expert but if it's moving sorta normally when you get there maybe it will keep moving sorta normally?
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 8:37pm n∅ expert:

(...i also don't know how far it is from the second stop away to where you'd normally get off)
  Wed. 2/28/18 8:41pm Gary:

In a cab now

HI EVERYONE
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:15pm northguineahills:

The only Hassan LP I have is a female vocalist from Lebanon. Is Mariem Hassan a favorite of the Polisario Front?
  Wed. 2/28/18 9:21pm Dean:

I want to respond to UM's remarks above about food as an expression of culture @8:22. I *do* so view food. It's common to depict multiculturalism" in culinary terms, e.g., elementary school pot lucks and such, and this fact--that it's an easy, non-controversial way to celebrate diversity--makes some people regard the association of food with identity as cynical and as a way to avoid real intercultural disputes. I disagree. Food, like music, is a profound and complex expression of identity.

But I also believe that food writer is the worst job in the world, in two respects. First, I personally would hate to have the job. Second, food writers, in a word, suck, and to a person, with one exception, Elizabeth David. Being antiocularcentric and therefore cinema-impaired, I can't imagine watching somebody promote culinary diversity on film. It would make me gag.
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:22pm northguineahills:

Whoops, brain fart, the Lebanese vocalist name was Hannan (already worked 38 hours this week)
  Wed. 2/28/18 9:22pm Dean:

Just my two scents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/28/18 9:22pm Gary:

Hannan! I have some of her CDs
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:27pm coelacanth∅:

these are my 2 scents: my sense of smell; and my smell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/28/18 9:29pm Uncle Michael:

Dean;"Food, like music, is a profound and complex expression of identity."

This is why I think you'd like this show. Chang is a chef, not a food writer. He has food writer friends on the show. The show is an exploration of food as identity, at its core.
  Wed. 2/28/18 9:29pm Dean:

"A bouquet like an aborigine's armpit!"
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:36pm northguineahills:

The area north and west of the Atlas Mountains isn't in the Sahara, but the areas in Morocco the the south and east are.
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:36pm coelacanth∅:

i'd check out that show, if i had the means to.
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:37pm northguineahills:

Remember getting sample lists in magazines to inform you on your crate-digging trips?
  Wed. 2/28/18 9:37pm Dean:

Chef-not-a-food-writer doesn't necessarily work in his favor, but I get the message. I assume he isn't rhapsodizing about "presentation" (which I nevertheless believe can be important, useful, artful), but instead addressing economies, chains of distribution, traditions, maybe even cultural signifiers (think Barthes' Mythologies).
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:37pm northguineahills:

I saw the Chemical Bros live in '97, it was actually a good show.

i was pretty into "dig your own hole" at the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/28/18 9:44pm Gary:

Dig Your Own Hole was the first thing I heard by them, driving w/my GF from one Lao store to another in TX
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/28/18 9:44pm Uncle Michael:

Dean, some of your assumptions are right, but not many!
  Wed. 2/28/18 9:46pm Dean:

Par for the course.
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:46pm northguineahills:

@coel: classic album, actually all of their's before that as well, after that, is there was just a few decent tracks here and there before and by 2005ish, it was indistinguishable from much EDM trash. But damn, up until 2000ish, they put out a lot of amazing albums and 12"s! (I have plenty).

Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:47pm northguineahills:

I also like how they hit on that faux nostalgia look to the future. It wasn't as pronounced or as creepy as BOC, but they did it pretty well. (That's a compliment)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/28/18 9:49pm Gary:

Hey, NGH, what are some other big beaters of that period that you like -- could use some recommendations
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:49pm coelacanth∅:

yeah i became disinterested after the next album didn't do much for me. always meant to check out their earlier albums but gradually lost interest in that type of music, except in rare circumstances.
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:50pm coelacanth∅:

"boc"...?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/28/18 9:54pm Uncle Michael:

Blue Oyster Cult? heh

Blue "Oyster" Cult? Food writing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 2/28/18 9:56pm Gary:

I actually kind of love Blue Oyster Cult, although I don't like patchouli, so I have no idea who or what demographic I am
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:56pm northguineahills:

Boards of Canada

Thanks Gary!

Blue Oyster Cult cross many boundaries of taste . Cool with the heshers and the arty kids.

Thanks for the Saharan funkiness, Gary!
Avatar Wed. 2/28/18 9:59pm coelacanth∅:

when i first got my 8-track player 2-3 years ago i thoroughly enjoyed my blue oyster cult tape. it played all the way through then 1/2 way through the second run of track 1 it stopped because it was being swallowed by the machine. it could not be saved.
