Unlocking the Cage s…
Unlocking the Cage shown by Meaningful Movies
July 5, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Keystone Congregational Church, 5019 Keystone Pl N, Seattle, WA 98103, USA
Meaningful Movies presents a screening of Unlocking the Cage https://www.unlockingthecagethefilm.com/
“Unlocking the Cage” follows animal rights lawyer Steven Wise as he tries to break down the legal wall that separates animals from humans. Arguing that cognitively complex animals such as chimpanzees, whales, dolphins and elephants deserve to be treated as sentient, self-aware and autonomous beings, Steve and his legal team are making history by fighting to transform a chimpanzee from a “thing” with no rights to a “person” with limited legal protections. Currently he is advocating for elephants’ rights.
Steven Wise will be a guest speaker, so don't miss this opportunity to see the movie and ask questions afterwards https://meaningfulmovies.org/events/unlocking-the-cage/

Book Club Meeting
Book Club Meeting
July 27, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Greenwood Branch - The Seattle Public Library, 8016 Greenwood Ave N, Seattle, WA 98103, USA
Join us at Greenwood Library Meeting Room for our Book Club Meeting! Feel free to bring your coffee/tea, and a notepad/pen if you like. This is a casual, open-minded group, coming together to share thoughts and ideas, and our love of reading.
We plan to have 1 meeting in June for the first half of the book, and another meeting in July for the 2nd half. Even if you can't make it in person, you can participate in the discussion questions we will post here on Meetup.
Our book will be "Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows: An Introduction to Carnism" By Melanie Joy PhD.
https://www.amazon.com/Love-Dogs-Pigs-Wear-Cows/dp/1573245054/?tag=beyondcarnism-20
"Soon to be published in its twelfth language, Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows — the first book to introduce the concept of carnism — has received international acclaim.
In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Melanie Joy explores carnism, the invisible belief system that shapes our perception of the meat, eggs, and dairy we eat, so that we love some animals and eat others without knowing why. Carnism is sustained by complex psychological and social mechanisms that cause us to unknowingly act against our core values, our own interests, and the interests of others.
Like other “isms” (racism, sexism, etc.), carnism is most harmful when it is unrecognized. Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows names and explains this phenomenon and offers it up for examination. Unlike the many books that explain why we shouldn’t eat meat, Joy’s book explains why we do eat meat – and therefore how we can make more informed choices as citizens and consumers."
