While 同志 Comrade still used in official functions/speech in mainland China. Nobody younger than 50 would use it in everyday speech. 同志 nowadays primarily used to indicate LGBT, and the usage actually started in late 80s Hong Kong, then spread to Taiwan and Mainland.
