Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect.
The International Energy Agency projected in 2014 that under its "high renewables" scenario, by 2050, solar photovoltaics and concentrated solar power would contribute about 16 and 11 percent, respectively, of the worldwide electricity consumption, and solar would be the world's largest source of electricity. Most solar installations would be in China and India.
Photovoltaics were initially solely used as a source of electricity for small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to remote homes powered by an off-grid rooftop PV system. As the cost of solar electricity has fallen, the number of grid-connected solar PV systems has grown into the millions and utility-scale solar power stations with hundreds of megawatts are being built. Solar PV is rapidly becoming an inexpensive, low-carbon technology to harness renewable energy from the Sun.
Togo (i/ˈtoʊɡoʊ/), officially the Togolese Republic (French: République Togolaise), is a country in West Africa bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the north. It extends south to the Gulf of Guinea, where its capital Lomé is located. Togo covers 57,000 square kilometres (22,000 sq mi), making it one of the smallest countries in Africa, with a population of approximately 7.5 million.
Togo is a tropical, sub-Saharan nation, highly dependent on agriculture, with a climate that provides good growing seasons. The official language is French, with many other languages spoken in Togo, particularly those of the Gbe family. The largest religious group in Togo consists of those with indigenous beliefs, and there are significant Christian and Muslim minorities. Togo is a member of the United Nations, African Union, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie and Economic Community of West African States.
From the 11th to the 16th century, various tribes entered the region from all directions. From the 16th century to the 18th century, the coastal region was a major trading center for Europeans in search of slaves, earning Togo and the surrounding region the name "The Slave Coast". In 1884, Germany declared Togoland a protectorate. After World War I, rule over Togo was transferred to France. Togo gained its independence from France in 1960.

We use solar lanterns as a tool for social entrepreneurship in Togo. As the people become financially more independent, the project empowers them to advance their economic status and create own business ideas. At the same time Enlightening Chances financially supports social initiatives in the communities. Hence, the project fulfills two aspects we identified as essential for our future work: - It is a local initiative, created by the people in need; agbe e.V. only acts as an enabler and supporter. - It aims to be a business incubator. In the past the project fulfilled the urgent needs of the people. Currently it utilizes local business creativity and in the future the project will become sustainable and independent of its funders. www.agbe.org

The Nyrstar Foundation presents the winner of the 2011 grant: 'Solar Kioks for Togo', a project of the Belgian non-profit organisation Solar Without Borders. The 'Solar Kiosks for Togo' project is dedicated to providing affordable solar powered electricity for local communities in Togo by setting up central solar powered kiosks that provide energy for lamps and mobile phones. The kiosks are located in small villages that have no access to the electricity grid. With the help of the Nyrstar Foundation grant, five additional villages will receive a solar powered kiosk and will have access to electricity and lighting, critical for health, education and general quality of life.

We are currently seeing a significant new trend toward national regulation of product quality for off-grid solar products in key African markets, including Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. Fortunately, this trend to date has involved adoption of quality assurance measures that are harmonized with the test methods included in IEC technical specification 62257-9-5 and the Lighting Global Quality Standards. In this webinar, we provide an overview of the activities in each country and a summary of the minor adjustments we will need to make to our QA activities, including especially with regard to communication of information about product quality, in order to facilitate smooth import of quality assured products into the respective countries. The first half of the webinar features a presentati...

(To enable the subtitles, click on the subtitles icon in the bottom right hand corner and select English) This training video presents the benefits of an improved stove design, by comparing it to the 'traditional stove': a metal tripod or mud structure with an open fire underneath, which many people in the world use to warm their homes and cook their meals. It also demonstrates exactly how to build it and which materials and tools are needed. The improved stove can be made entirely out of natural materials, such as earth, straw and stones, which are freely available in most rural areas. The video was made by four farmers and four staff members from the Himalayan Permaculture Centre (HPC) during a participatory video workshop in Baraguan, Surkhet, Nepal. White House Summit on Global Development - July 20, 2016 Two out of three people in sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to electricity, severely limiting access to quality health care, education, and economic opportunities for more than 600 million people. To help overcome this challenge, President Obama launched Power Africa in 2013 to double access to energy in sub-Saharan Africa. The United States' initial $7 billion commitment has leveraged nearly $43 billion in commitments from the public and private sectors, including more than $31 billion in commitments from private sector partners. With Power Africa support, transactions are expected to generate more than 4,600 MW have reached financial closure, putting us on course to increasing access to energy by 30,000 megawatts and add 60 ...

Investing in the continent has been a hot topic this past week with leaders from Africa gathering in the US to discuss this very prospect. Now infrastructure development is one of the key areas that investment is needed in, but in order for that development to take place certain commodities like something as basic as cement is needed. Considering the growth in Africa, it is little wonder that the cement industry has produced the richest man on the continent. So what investment opportunities does this commodity present today?
