Bless this fucking post. I grew up in a very rural area and now live in a small city, and it’s no end of consternation to me how little respect many leftists seem to have for rural lifestyles. It’s vaguely colonialist, even - stomping on local cultures and telling them they’d better assimilate to survive.
The only answer to people who want to salvage their communities and the only way of life they know should not be “just give up, it’s trash, join the 21st century”.
100% did not appreciate this phenomenon until I moved back to the mountains. The silence from the Left has been deafening. And it’s true, most ambitious leftist young people do leave and never come back. OTOH, the current ‘back to the land/ homesteading/ never farmed but want to be a farmer’ movement is also causing people who have never lived in rural areas to leave the cities and suburbs. Internet and telecommuting are changing the cultural landscape in ways not fully yet appreciated, although many deep rural areas - places that still don’t have high speed internet - in the US are dying out.
When I ran across r/RuralLeft on reddit I was so excited and even shared stuff there, but it was a dead community that the mod (a notorious powermod) did nothing to support. So much wasted potential there.
I personally gotta keep it lowkey since I’m a mod, but Leftists are super welcome over at r/appalachia

An interesting phenomenon is that many members of the community no longer live in Appalachia! They’re the ambitious ones who got out, but still care about where they came from. Maybe one day, some will come back and help to change things for the better.
I encourage all you farmcore folks to take your own dreams seriously. Rural areas can use more gentle, accepting, open-minded people working to make a more sustainable and beautiful world.

tbh I can’t imagine aziraphale growing attached to puppies or kittens or anything like that bc it would break his heart each & every time he lost one to age , but I can picture him palling around w a giant tortoise, who lives upward of 100 years

I could never understand the urgency—why go hurry eternity? just because the tortoise and the hare went different speeds didn’t mean they couldn’t both envision the finish line. but after the experience of almost losing him, I’ve begun to wonder, I have left him waiting an awful long time, haven’t I?
