The MUP Academic series showcases the best of Australian academic research and writing. The list is especially designed for readers and writers of scholarly material by making specialist research readily available in an affordable and attractive choice of formats.
All MUP Academic titles are peer reviewed and are intended to support the community of scholars from early career researchers to eminent senior academics. The key areas that we publish in are history, Australian politics and policy, education, Islamic studies, and military/strategy.
Islamic Studies
The Islamic Studies Series is edited by Professor Shahram Akbarzadeh, Deputy Director (International) of the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Faculty of Arts & Education, Deakin University.
The series is aimed at producing internationally competitive research manuscripts. The series showcases the breadth of scholarship on Islam and Muslim affairs, making it available to a wide readership. Books in the ISS are based on original research and represent a number of disciplines including anthropology, cultural studies, sociology and political science. They are referred publications that are committed to research excellence.
Submissions on contemporary issues are strongly encouraged. Proposals should be sent to the ISS Editor.
History
Our History Series is edited by Professor Joy Damousi, at University of Melbourne.
Defence
Our Defence Series is edited by Professor Peter Dean, at University of Western Australia, and Brendan Taylor, at Australian National University.
The aim of this series is to publish outstanding works of research on strategy and warfare with a focus on Australia and the region. Books in the series take a broad approach to defence studies, examining war in its numerous forms, including military, strategic, political and historic aspects.
The series focus is principally on the hard power elements of military studies, in particular the use or threatened use of armed force in international affairs. This includes the history of military operations across the spectrum of conflict, Asia’s strategic transformation and strategic policy options for Australia and the region.

Titles printed under the MUP Academic imprint also stem from a range of other disciplines, including Aboriginal studies; law; science; international relations; media and culture; sociology; economics; and philosophy. MUP does not accept unrevised theses and conference proceedings for publication.
MUP Academic titles are available on our website as eBooks, as well as being offered in paperback and hardback editions. MUP has developed this imprint to publish academic work of outstanding merit that makes a significant contribution to its field, that is likely to have an international audience but may not necessarily enjoy a large commercial audience.
