Warwick University Ltd lives on, 50 years on

Prices are rising for sports facilities at Warwick University. Below is a link to the story in the student newspaper, the Boar.

I am of course fully in favour of student protest not least because it may encourage some to continue doing it in later life.

My specific interest however was in the quote from E P Thompson below. Thompson was the first head of the Centre for Social History there in the second half of the 1960s and was one of the people behind the Penguin Special, Warwick University Ltd which exposed the Universities business links and how these compromised academic freedom.

“It is appalling to see that students must pay this much a month to workout at the gym, a reality that proves – as E. P. Thompson I am sure would agree – the extortionate and business-first nature of the University’s outlook.

The fact that, unfortunately, over time, those battles were mostly lost, is no reason not to keep on having them.
