'In fewer than 150 pithy pages, Galeotti sketches a bleak, but convincing picture of the man in the Kremlin and the political system that he dominates' -

If envoys are fired for writing critically about their host government there would be no diplomats in Washington, London, Brussels, Rome, Paris, Moscow, Berlin, Beijing, New Delhi, Islamabad,... I could go on. Every envoy is critical of every host government. That’s their job.

As the repercussions of the craven leak of Kim Darroch's telegrams expand, it's right that, as has said, this be considered a form of treason + investigated by police, not the usual internal inquiry. We must reverse this growing phenomenon of politics by leak

It’s not totally hopeless. Even Italy is better than under Andreotti. LKY cleaned up SIN. In Russia 🇷🇺 one needs a czar who cares about it & a massive deregulation eliminating corruption opportunities. Courts & services would be the hardest 🥜 2crack as bribes can be in millions

As a chaser to ”Moscow Rules”, read ’s ”We Need to Talk About Putin” today. Great read. Fills in what we should know about the man and his court now, how is role has evolved, and what the feeling on the ground is about him.

I'm really not sure if I can accept this notion of a "Primakov Doctrine" in . He was a sharp, effective, articulate advocate + executor of a line which had already been pretty much orthodoxy. He was its high priest, not its originator, I think

In other words, is a complex place, that cannot be explained by any single factor ("it's all about corruption", "it's all about Putin" etc). Deepest corruption + worst abuses alongside (some) people in the system genuinely trying to do their jobs + the right thing

Take aways from series of recent arrests of FSB officers in 1 security agencies (esp FSB) are deeply corrupt + criminalised 2 but they are not untouchable 3 some arrests are bcs of factional rivalries + control of lucrative bizs 4 others are real expressions of legality
