United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has declared war on hate speech, telling Member States, that we all need to “do better at looking out for each other.” “Hate speech may have gained a foothold, but it is now on notice. We will never stop confronting it,” Mr. Guterres said, launching the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech. It sets out strategic guidance for the UN system to address hate speech at the national and global level. It also includes ways the UN Secretariat can support the work of the Resident Coordinators in addressing and countering hate speech. Its objectives are twofold: first, to enhance UN efforts to address root causes and drivers of hate speech; and second, to enable effective UN responses to the impact of hate speech on societies.
In order to participate equally in political, social and economic life, women and girls need mobility. In many societies around the world, sexual harassment in public spaces has long been a barrier to this mobility and a general sense of security, constraining women’s access to education and employment opportunities, outside the confines of home.Funded by the government of Japan, the $1.69 million Sakura bus project will help address some of the issues women face when accessing the public transportation system in Pakistan. Throughout the project UNOPS worked closely with UN Women as well as various bodies of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to collect information on safety issues around transportation for women such as lighting, visibility and security at bus stops.
UN-Water coordinates the efforts of UN entities and international organizations working on water and sanitation issues. In order to better serve its constituents, UN-Water has designed a survey to learn more about people’s knowledge of water and sanitation and what they think about its communication.The ‘quizurvey’ – a hybrid between a quiz and a survey – takes around 10 minutes to complete and is available in the six official UN languages. South Sudanese refugee turned professional photographer, Bullen Chol, has inspired more refugees in Uganda through the World Food Programme (WFP) Storytellers project. Bullen overcame the odds to be one of the most sought-after local photographers in South Sudan, contributing to the Associated Press, Reuters and international humanitarian organizations. “You must fight for it,” Bullen tells the Storytellers, “most people don’t understand the power of photography, so we need to tell those stories: positive stories about culture and tradition — not just the negative ones about war and conflict. There is a generation to come and they need to know about South Sudan.” Bullen helped to train 34 refugees in digital storytelling skills: photography, video and social media.
Families around the world look, feel, and live differently today. Families can be “make or break” for women and girls when it comes to achieving their rights. In today’s changing world, laws and policies need to be based on the reality of how families live. UN Women’s flagship report, “Progress of the world’s women 2019–2020: Families in a changing world,” assesses the reality of families today in the context of sweeping economic, demographic, political, and social transformation. It analyses key issues such as family laws, employment, unpaid care work, violence against women, and families and migration. At a critical juncture for women’s rights, this landmark report proposes a comprehensive family-friendly policy agenda to advance gender equality in diverse families.
