Justice for the People of Bhopal
In the dark of night, as December 2 rolled over into December 3, 1984 and nearby residents slept, toxic gas began leaking from a pesticide factory in Bhopal. Within three days, as many as 10,000 people had died in the central Indian town.
Since then another 12,000 have died. Thousands of survivors and their descendants have suffered – and still suffer -- long-term health problems from the effects of gas exposure. Respiratory illnesses, damage to internal organs, and problems with the immune system are common.

Those who survived have faced long-term health problems, but receive little medical help. For 30 years the survivors of Bhopal have campaigned for justice, for fair compensation, health care and for Union Carbide, now owned by Dow Chemicals, to be held to account. ” |
Amnesty International calls on the government of India to ensure the site is cleaned up, the survivors are supported and the companies responsible for the gas leak and ongoing pollution are held accountable. We also urge the US government to ensure that the US company Dow Chemical complies with ongoing legal actions and cooperates with the Indian government to remedy the consequences of the Bhopal disaster.
