Leftfield piano house with: Dark MTTR, and P-LASK #house #pianoHouse #electronic #NewMusic

I’ve observed a few times that I’m a bit of a sucker for piano house. Here are a couple of tracks this morning that give piano house more of a leftfield spin, from Dark MTTR and P-LASK.

The UK’s Dark MTTR has appeared here a few times before with some quality tunes. And this one continues that quality run. Leaving the Road Ahead Behind is a gorgeous lofi house track with some lovely Rhodes stabs that rise and fall. And in so doing they hit on that emotional weak spot in all of us, tapping into loss and hope in some ineffable way. Hardly surprising then that Dark MTTR says “I wrote this song shortly after a long term relationship break up, which came out the blue.” A melancholic air is constantly challenged by the optimism of the piano line. This perfectly delivers on Dark MTTR’s intent that, “I wanted to counter the negativity I was feeling with an uplifting, upbeat track.” Delightfully dreamy.

Next, from Los Angeles, USA comes P-LASK and Open House. To be honest, this is more deep house than piano house. But it does have that stabbing quality to the piano synths that gives that piano house uplift. That effect is further enhanced by the positive vocal of “House sees no race, creed or colour.” Simple yes, but still necessary in these populist days. In many ways this track is a gambol across the last thirty years of house music, dragging in elements from Chicago, Detroit and jack. Sit back and enjoy your history lesson.

Rainy day chilling with: MARTH – Golden Hour #chill #electronic #NewMusic

Dinosaur

Summer rain. Steady but not hard. Grey skies back again. Time to stay indoors, nurse a coffee and relax to MARTH track Golden Skies.

This is a trumpet focused chilled track. It’s a bit Kinobe. A bit 90s chill. And none the worse for that. There’s a lovely relaxed sense. A positive sense of the future. MARTH says, “Inspired by a painting from Van Gogh. It discribes the feeling that goes with that one specific hour on a day when everything look more beautiful.“ The dinosaur at the top of this post benefits from the effect of the burnished hue of golden hour light. But you can also bathe in the warmth of this track. Take the time to have your own golden hour.

Hard techno with: Daniel Preafericitul – Commute #acid #techno #HardTechno #NewMusic

If there’s still sleep in your eyes. Or you’re wistfully looking back at the weekend. Then let me adminster a musical slap in the chops. Daniel Preafericitul is the man to do it with the hard techno of Commute. Tougher than geetting on the Bakerloo Line at rush hour this compresses everything down to the essentials. A bit like platform positioning so you’re in front of the doors when the train stops at the platform. Daniel says “This is one of three tracks recorded live using the Roland TR8, the MAM MB33, Logic’s Alchemy and a bunch of distortion.” That sums it up pretty well. No modern digital trickery here. This is old skool. There’s acid and hard beats. Beats come. They stamp all over your face. Acid lines twist your mind into new shapes. Distortion disorientates your mind. Don’t forget to change trains at Baker Street and enjoy your day.

Live Sessions EP

Evening chill with: DJ Chillz, and Dima Ivanho #DeepHouse #chill #house #electronic #NewMusic

After this morning’s chill triple, a couple of tracks with a night time perkiness to them before we leave the weekend. The track are provided by DJ Chillz and Dima Ivanho.

DJ Chillz (Debbie Adebowale) is based in London and gives us the tribal house flavoured deep house track 1111 Accord. This, she says is, “An introspective journey inspired by the passion for her African heritage.” It’s about unity and positivity. The tribal drums give this track a real stomp and punch. Set alongside some piano house stabbing this is a fantastic dance floor friendly track but which will also work at the BBQ.

Next, Dima Ivanho from the Netherlands and Sungazing. A track taken from the Endless Desert EP. This is late afternoon with one too many beers / glasses of wine just laying back and watching the sky and the clouds drift by. It’s a glittery, hazy track. A world of boundless possibilities. Chiming melodies and bits of worldwide sounds accompanied by trappish beats. Work can wait. Enjoy the moment.

Let’s chill with: sonderlands, Fernando Tanji, and Rob Blake #chill #HipHop #electronic #downtempo

The sun’s all hazy. There’s a residual night time freshness in the air that’s being burned away. The wind rustles the grasses. And the bloody snails have been at the plants again. But let’s relax with a triple chill breakfast from sonderlands, Fernando Tanji and Rob Blake.

sonderlands is from the USA. And if you think it’s an odd artist name it is explained thus:

sonder (n.) the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own — populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries — an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground.”

The track is bad poetry. But there’s nothing bad here. This is a gently chiming chill tune but with awkward creaky trap elements that make it so now. There’s a background set of samples but nothing really interferes with the delightfully mentronomic effect of the central refrain. Properly relaxing.

Next, from Brazil comes Fernando Tanji and Naomi, a track from his debut Yurei EP. This isn’t my usual thing being completely about a guitar instrumental (with nylon strings, apparently). The track is compressed into a little under two minutes. But manages the trick of feeling longer by deftly supending time. Riffs gently rise and fall in an almost jazz kind of way but with a hint of flamenco peeping out every so often. Lovely.

And to set you up for the perfect brunch here’s Rob Blake from Brighton on the South Coast of England with the funk hip hop of Seven Keys. A track taken from his Soul Funk & Electric album. It’s got swing. It’s got a love of life. It’s shaking its rump at you. Trumpets blare, beats scratch away, piano key are rocked. Some acoustic guitar stops it getting too epic or forward leaning. The whole thing is about sunshine and unbridled optimism. Enjoy.

Experimental with: Trovato – FM #idm #electronic #experimental #NewMusic

Let’s have something defiantly experimental this morning. Although I suspect he would prefer the label Avant-Garde. The he in this case is Trovato who was born in Italy but raised in Australia. He describes himself as, “an Avant-Garde Electronic Music Producer and Composer Influenced by Sci-Fi and Cinematic soundscapes.” And we get plenty of that warped sci-fi on FM, his debut single.

FM is a three minute fifties sci-fi atmosphere of synths and strangeness. A Rhodes type set of synth chords offering a wandering out there retro vision of space. But then here comes some IDM awkwardness to the beats to give it that futuristic spin. And finally, all manner of electronic tortured sounds applied to keep you off balance. In space, no one can hear you dance.

Leftfield triple with: Agency666, Alexander Wright, and Lanky Lgs #IDM #house #acid #NewMusic

Jango’s done a bit of early Christmas shopping and he’s bought a triple selection for you from Agency666, Alexander Wright, and Lanky Lgs. The sounds flow from leftfield house, into IDM and ambient and finally some frazzled acid.

Agency666 is an Istanbul born, Chicago based Producer/DJ delivering underground techno, which says he touches on, “the themes of violence, melancholia, and nostalgia.” Can you get which theme we’re dealing with on the track Melancholia? In fact, this isn’t the depressed dirge you might be expecting. It’s a slightly dark leftfield lofi house track. There’s a minimalism here that really works, offering all the elements some proper space in which to breath (or perhaps, sigh). All the sounds have an engaging wonkiness. What is happening it says. You’re being sucked in. That’s what.

Next, Alexander Wright, who is another living away from the country of his birth. He is a producer, mixing and mastering engineer from Australia. He currently lives in the United States. The track is One Flew from his The Blue Shores of Silence LP. At a sonic level, I guess Flying Lotus offers the nearest reference point. On the one hand, its a lovely calm ambient synth piano journey. All soft pads and held tones. At another it’s the fizzy, scratchy discordant IDM of the troubled mind. This is all accentuated by the spoken vocal of angelic bombs and eternal mercy. You may not find peace here but you will certainly be intrigued.

Finally, Lanky Lgs from Stockholm, Sweden. He offers the perky acid house of Acid Pattern. Where most acid tracks go for techno or psychedelic underpinnings Lanky stays within a house template. This gives the track a lightness of touch and a welcome optimism. The acid vies with skipping beats and a set of synths designed to stay on the lght side. Really fun track to make you smile. Seven minutes of gay abandon. Turn on, tune in, dance out.
