Your Ward News update: James Sears fires his lawyer

Today was supposed to be a good day. James Sears was supposed to be sentenced, which would likely have meant handcuffs and jail for him this morning, May 31st, 2019. But then, yesterday news broke that it wasn't going to happen. At least not yet.

I thought maybe it had to do with LeRoy St. Germain's sentencing delay, due to his late Gladue Report, which is also scheduled for July 15th. Perhaps sentencing them both at the same time would cut down on their shenanigans and otherwise make life easier for everyone.

Nope. Nothing that logical.

The Toronto Star reported yesterday evening that James Sears fired his lawyer, Dean Embry, claiming that he had thrown the case. He also apparently plans to launch a constitutional challenge of S319(2) prior to his July 15th sentencing, and, unless something changes, he will do this without legal representation.

For his part, Dean Embry claims he didn't throw the case, and, despite once being described as "vicious and astute" in Your Ward News, Embry appears not to have understood what he was signing up for when he took Sears on as a client. He had trouble controlling Sears during their last court appearance when he wanted to present a lengthy "allocation." Embry stood by helplessly while Sears, during said speech, brought his friend Johnathan forward as an example of someone who's anger was supposedly redirected away from violence due YWN.

To give Embry some credit, he admitted on record that his client's work did devolve into hate speech and called it repugnant. Outside of court, Embry experienced backlash from the general public when a woman threw hot coffee on him at a shop near court. (I can't find the link right now. I'll add it when I do). I suspect Embry is relieved at being dumped by his client. It's a shame, however, that he did not see fit to dump his client first.

In any event, sometime between now and July 15th, the James Sears circus will begin again, this time without the restraints of legal council. One can only guess how, exactly, he plans to "reason with the judge" since he failed to do that last time. To give you an idea what we're in for, here's a clip published earlier on the blog that illustrates his "thought process" when it comes to legal proceedings. WARNING: n-word used.

Yup. Self-representation will be a disaster.

Boswick's and Storie's Tête a Têtes With Max Bernier and Paul Fromm

Because I've decided, at least for the next few weeks or perhaps months, to limit the amount of research and writing I've been doing (trying to create a bit of a balance between real world work, anti-racist activism, and a social life) there will be a few articles that are a bit dated but which are still of relevance.

Such as this article.

Over the past number of months we've been paying a bit more attention to unemployed drifters Rick Boswick and Derek Storie who instead of doing something productive with their time instead pretend to be journalists. Of course as we've seen their understanding of journalism means accepting every crack pot conspiracy theory they read, posting drunken rants on Facebook, and threatening actual journalists:

I feel that I need to stress that Boswick and Storie published this video exactly as it has been posted. I have not edited it at all. They think this video makes them appear good.

They've also taken on the cause of a mentally ill man arrested when he arrived an an event featuring the Prime Minister with plans on making a citizens arrest and having threatened to harm Trudeau online:

Now Boswick and Storie have interviewed the usual miscreants associated with the fringe right in the country including Faith Goldy (who is currently trending because of some accusations concerning just how Faith-full she has been) and Kevin "the Poodle" Johnston lately paying special attention to his recent legal problems:

However, they did recently get an interview on May 3 with someone who at one time had some mainstream credibility:

Sears and St. Germaine Sentencing Update

While trying to piece together media reports and accounts from ARC supporters of the Your Ward News sentencing hearing this morning, one word keeps coming to mind: circus.

Sears answers media questions outside court, flanked by skinheads and other supporters. April 26, 2019 (Photo submitted by an ARC reader.)
Your Ward News' Editor in Chief, James Sears, and Publisher, LeRoy St. Germaine, were found guilty in January of willfully promoting hatred against Jews and women under S319(2) of the criminal code. In the lead-up to today's hearing, Sears likened himself to Christ and seemed to relish the idea of being led away in cuffs on Greek Orthodox Good Friday. He also claimed he would (checks notes) bring his "posse of black folks" with him, and would attempt to "reason with the Judge."

Spoiler: no "posse" was in attendance, and certainly no successful "reasoning" occurred.

Crown Attorney Erica Whitford presented thorough submissions relying on extensive research of existing case law that referenced many, if not all, hate crimes cases that have resulted in a custodial sentence in Canada. She called for the maximum sentence of 6 months per count, for a total of 1 year, to be served consecutively. In addition, she asked for 3 years probation, with strict conditions that would prohibit Sears from publishing within that period. The sentence, she argued, must serve both as a denunciation of the hate speech that occurred, as well as a deterrent for future incidents of said hate speech. CP24 reported that she also referenced multiple victim and community impact statements that read, in part:

"By delivering Your Ward News to our door, they were saying there was nowhere to feel safe."
"Hate speech strikes at the heart of Canadian values. The glorification of violence against women made them feel vulnerable, retraumatized some, and tended to hurt the cause of equality overall."

Sears' attorney, Dean Embry, conceded that Your Ward News did devolve into hate speech, and called it "repugnant," however, he argued that the publication was not "created with the sole purpose of spreading genocidal thought," and, amazingly, insisted that the Crown had failed to prove that YWN had, in fact, caused any actual harm. According to reports, he insisted that the total sentence should be no more than 2-4 months called for a four-month conditional sentence and added that the Judge cannot sentence based on "theoretical harm." He also claimed that barring Sears from publishing anything for 3 years was too broad.

The proceedings started to go off the rails when Sears was given the opportunity to speak. He had prepared a 62-page "allocution," that he claimed would take at least an hour to deliver. Judge Blouin instructed him, repeatedly, to stick to issues pertaining only to sentencing, however, he still apparently managed to take up 20 minutes of the court's time. Here's a sampling of what he said:

CTV quotes Sears as saying, "I'm approached on a regular basis by angry men, and sometimes women, that Your Ward News gave them a voice when no one else would. Several men have told me that, because of our publication, they did not commit violence."

He also apparently brought a blind man to court who he presented before the Judge as an example of someone who was "saved" from committing an act of violence against the doctor who blinded him. YWN, he claimed, gave this man a "release valve" for his rage and he now spends his time handing out copies of the publication on street corners.

Perhaps most interestingly, Sears thanked a woman named "Grace," who is supposedly one of his publication's strongest financial backers. He said she flew in from Japan to be present at the sentencing.

UPDATE 1: We have confirmed that "Grace" from Japan is, in fact, Holocaust denier Grace Eki-Oyama, who, at one point, vacationed with Paul Fromm in Cuba.

But wait! There's more:

After calling the Crown racist, he, according to CTV, tried to reason with the Judge, stating that "We're just trying to open a discussion. His Honour cannot take one side of a religious debate or one side of a political debate."

He then goes on to contradict himself and engage in his trademarked grandstanding:

Despite not having his promised "posse" with him, media have reported that about 15 supporters of the publication were in attendance. So far, ARC has identified the usual suspects, including Paul Fromm, Bahman Yazdanfar, Lawrence McCurry, Arthur Smitherman, and the woman we previously identified as a long-time court attender, dating back to the Zundel trials. We are working to identify some others, and expect to have an updated list soon.

Judge Blouin is taking a month to review the sentencing submissions, including the victim impact statements, which apparently were only delivered to him last night. Sears is expected to be sentenced on May 31st.

St. Germaine has a longer reprieve as the court needs to wait for the submission of his pre-sentencing report. (We assume the press is referring to the Gladue Report). St. Germaine's sentencing is scheduled for July 15th.

UPDATE 1a:

Your Ward News contributor, Lawrence McCurry, uploaded a video of yesterday's media scrum with James Sears and his friend Jonathan, who is the blind man Sears claims his paper "saved" from committing an act of violence. For the sake of transparency, I'll make clear that I edited out the beginning where McCurry tries to get Warren Kinsella and Bernie Farber to comment. He claims they were not present to see justice done, but to "represent the globalist position and ideology to the controlled corporate media who have not been honest in the way they have reported on this story from the very start." He then goes on to show a media clip used by a mainstream news outlet to illustrate how the press manipulates things. The bulk of his video, however, is unedited footage of Sears' media scrum, which is what I've included here. Sears sticks to his talking points from his "allocution" about YWN being a release valve, that he is a law-abiding citizen who was trying to open a discussion, and then digs in to his plans for a constitutional challenge over his conviction and pending sentence. Paul Fromm chimes in and compares Sears to James Joyce! I'll let the rest speak for itself, however, I will add a WARNING that there is some graphic language regarding rape:

James Sears plans new publication/religious organization, encourages harassment, and generally feeds his massive ego

We last saw James Sears and LeRoy St. Germaine of Your Ward News enjoying the media spotlight on January 24th after being found guilty of hate crimes against women and Jews under S319(2) of the criminal code. If you hop over to the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, you can view Justice Richard Blouin’s full judgment and the 17-page appendix of evidence that contributed to the guilty verdict. Spoiler: it’s beyond appalling.

These haters, as haters often do, refused to take “no” for an answer. Sears vowed to keep publishing and distributing. Even though I realized Your Ward News would resurface at some point, I was nonetheless surprised when B’nai Brith Canada broke the news earlier this month that the Winter 2019 edition, which was published before the guilty verdict, was distributed in some east-end Toronto neighbourhoods a mere 36 days after their conviction.
The cover of the Winter 2019 edition features Lisa and Warren Kinsella, with some attempt at sexual humour, which, unfortunately, was expected. Inside, Sears gets off to quite a start by trotting out his now-revoked doctor credentials as an excuse to engage in anti-vax conspiracies, while also bringing in his favourite go-tos, antisemitism and misogyny. One wonders if he strained something packing so much hate and nonsense into one article.

In the "Message from Our Editor In Chief," Sears uses misogynistic humour in an effort to shame and debase an unhappy recipient of the rag. When in doubt, hide behind hate? He also boldly outlines his plans for this year, which include setting up a 3,000 sq ft "Hitler Fan Club" clubhouse and daily livestreams, along with some other goodies. It's unclear how the guilty verdict will impact all of this activity, but we hope it sends it all back to the mothballed attic:

Given Sears' publishing record, his plan to target Muslims and Jews for religious conversion in a new "Christian-Aquarian quarterly" is particularly concerning. ARC has also learned this is part of a religious organization of sorts that Sears has in development. He's still mulling it over, but he thinks it may be a mix of Jordan Peterson's 12 Rules for Life, National Socialism, and his warped view of Christianity. This is all still in the idea stage, and will hopefully remain so.

In case you had any doubt about his feelings towards Jews, he lays it out there for all to see in a piece criticizing Jared Kushner:

I planned to go on reviewing this YWN issue and Sears' whining about being persecuted by the Kinsellas and Richard Warman, but then I wondered what he was saying now that he's been found guilty under S319(2)? How was he squaring this away when he wasn't busy hiding behind a computer screen? As luck would have it, in Paul Fromm's speech in Vancouver outlined here, he mentioned that Sears spoke at a CAFE event in Hamilton (March 3rd). Of that event, Fromm likens Sears to a saint and martyr and adds that "I don't think I'm conveying it [Sears' speech] with quite the impact it had on the crowd."

Well, with such a supposedly powerful video out there, I couldn't help but track it down. I'll admit, it does make an impression, but not the one Paul Fromm imagines. Buckle up my friends, it's going to be a bumpy ride!

Sears gets right into the court case and, not surprisingly, claims he was misquoted and misunderstood. Of his disgusting remark about women being "tri-orfaced chattel" he claims he was trying to "open a discussion."

On the off chance he believes his own BS, it might surprise him to learn there is a whole body of scholarship on women's oppression that doesn't rely on offensive language in order to explore the topic. I'd be happy to lend him some books while he's in jail.

Paul Fromm on Christchurch Manifesto: "I would agree with 95% of it" (and other racist ramblings)

NOTE: This is from ARC's newest writer, officially making the ARC Collective actually a collective again.

Those following along this week know that Paul Fromm is being investigated for publishing the Christchurch shooter's manifesto on his CAFE website. ARC has since learned that Fromm also published the manifesto, and the same preamble, on Canada First.

To make matters more...interesting, a video has surfaced of Fromm speaking at an event hosted and filmed by Brian Ruhe in Vancouver on March 16th, entitled "Rewriting Reality: Canada's Political Marxist Elite Loses Its Grip. And NZ Shooting." Ruhe is quite a fan of Fromm's, as discussed here, here, and here.

It's one thing to write a piece on the internet, but it's quite another to speak in front of a very friendly audience. As expected, Fromm has a lot more to say about the Christchurch shooter's manifesto, and other things he considers to be pressing concerns. But first, the manifesto, which, to Fromm, "makes sense:"

He goes on to discuss the theories -- and I use the term loosely -- of population replacement outlined in the manifesto and gives the first part of the document his stamp of approval. However, he believes the shooter did not fully explain the cause of this supposed problem:

And of course, as he said before, he doesn't agree with violence, BUT...

He then moves on to other topics, including Trudeau's supposed fear of Canada's Yellow Vests, who he quite enthusiastically supports:

Perhaps not surprisingly, he denies any knowledge of Yellow Vest members calling for Trudeau's assassination, but then goes on to call the PM a traitor and states that soldiers should go above and beyond a fence or a wall to protect our borders:

On the subject of James Sears and LeRoy St Germaine's recent conviction under S319(2) of the criminal code for promoting hatred against women and Jews, Fromm cannot resist using vile antisemitism himself:

Staying on antisemitism for a moment, in the Q & A, we learn that Fromm distributes British Fascist Arnold Leese's book on Jewish ritual murder, which made quite an impression on at least one person in attendance:

He also takes a swipe at Vancouver police for refusing to "protect" Stefan Molyneux and Lauren Southern's March 15th event, which was cancelled at the last minute. Apparently, diversity policies within the Force are to blame, because, of course they are:

Near the end of his hour-long ramblings, Fromm takes aim at Public Safety Canada for hiring Dr. Barbara Perry, and other accomplished academics, to study right-wing extremism in Canada. In a rant that includes misogyny, homophobia, Islamophobia, and Fromm's egotism, he seems equally incensed that the government is spending money on this project, that Dr. Perry hasn't spoken to him, and that the government hasn't given him the project instead. In the interest of transparency, I've edited together four segments of his rant, presented in chronological order, to cut down on unnecessary blather:

I think he's effectively illustrated why contemporary racists and racist movements in Canada need to be researched, understood, and called out. It's always helpful when guys like Fromm justify our work for us.

James Sears and LeRoy St. Germaine of Racist Rag Your Ward News Convicted

I'm actually out of town but I figured that this was news worth publishing:

ARC was also sent some photos of the aftermath by a supporter.

Apparently Sears compared himself to Jesus being crucified because of course he did.

Sears and St. Germaine also had supporters who attended:

The woman was a frequent attendee at the Ernst Zundel trials. In the bottom photo the individual on the right appears to be Bahman Yazdanfar (not sure who the neckbeard dude is).

Lawrence McCurry and Arthur Smitherman were present.... they seem upset:

This is my favorite post left on Smitherman's video:

Gotta love the lack of curiosity or willingness to investigate the claim.

Full time Islamophobes Sandra Soloman and Eric Brazau could be seen (and shrilly heard) outside the court house:

UPDATE: Seems that the video Smitherman posted isn't accurate (it might actually be from 2017). Also, ore information from a friend:
Sorry...but there’s an error on the blog. Solomon and Brazau were not outside the courthouse. They were outside the Eaton’s Centre at the south/west corner of Yonge/Dundas. They were protesting against a Muslim organization that sets up shop there everyday (well, they’re always there when I go by, at least) to hand out free copies of the Quran. That particular corner attracts a lot of proselytizers of various sorts. Quran dude (possibly multiple dudes) was always one of the laid back ones in my experience. Brazau and Solomon showing up there with a poster with the Quran dude’s table on it, to protest him/his org directly on the street with their hateful bullshit is incredibly hostile! I’m shocked they weren’t charged with harassment or intimidation or similar.
No word if Paul Fromm was also present, but we're sure to hear from him about this, as well as I'm sure an earnest request to donate money for an appeal; whether or not said money reaches James Sears and LeRoy St. Germaine is a very interesting question.

Faith Goldy Burning ALL The Bridges

Since Ms. Goldy has some hefty legal fees that she needs to pay off in a relatively short amount of time, she has taken to the Internet to beg ask her incel, beta, almost exclusively male supporters in a groveling dignified manner to make a contribution to her efforts. As she has been booted from Patreon for violating their terms of service and bitcoins aren't what they used to be, this has been a bit of a challenge. To that end, Faith has decided to take the entrepreneurial route:

Aside from not being especially original in that she didn't exactly design the Canadian Coat of Arms, it also appears that Faith Goldy is breaking the law:

Sort of puts this in a bit of perspective:

In truth, things haven't been going all that well for Faith since the Toronto municipal election. And she is very, very, angry:

In addition to her rather crushing legal fees, she has been engaged in an ongoing (and generally one sided) feud with Jordan "Lobster" Peterson which hearkens to 2017 when she was uninvited to a "free speech" event Peterson was involved in due to her rather unsavory reputation. She posted this most recent missive at the end of 2018:

The go-to insult of these folks is to call those they are angry at either communists, liberals (or "libtards" for those who wish to think themselves more creative in their insults), or antifa, so this is simply par for the course. The reaction she received was rather telling though:

In fact, her posts on this subject appear to have alienated more supporters. When the choice is the woman they not so secretly want to have sex with or the sexist male guru they worship as they would a cult leader, the incel brigade have thrown their lot in with the he-man woman hater:

Ouch.

Less significantly, she has lost the folks ow "Your Ward News" too:

Meh....

Realizing she's been disavowed by alt-right and alt-right adjacent personalities, she appears to be trying to create a new narrative:

Antisemitic, Racist, Misogynistic, and Islamophobic Rag STILL Barred From Using Canada Post

Congratulations to the Kinsellas who spearheaded this.

Now let's wait and see how the criminal case pans out, though after this I'm feeling mighty optimistic.

Also, this:

Ontario 2018 Civic Election

I've been watching "Murdoch Mysteries".

Anything interesting happening? ;)

Okay, okay!

TORONTO:

Let's start with Faith Goldy. She is currently a very distant third place with 24,852 or 3.39% of the vote. On the one hand it is disappointing that many people voted for her, she doesn't seem likely to break 4% and given her name recognition when associated with "Sun News" and later "Rebel Media" perhaps this shouldn't be a surprise. It also is likely to be the high point in her political career, such that it ever was.

I'm a glass half full sort of person

Other fascists have performed much worse. Chris Brosky running under Don Andrew's Nationalist Party of Canada banner is currently sitting at 2,694 (0.37%) while James Sears of the neo-Nazi rag "Your Ward News" has an emasculating 657 (0.09%) of the vote.

HAMILTON:

Oh, Paulie.... why do you continue to subject yourself to this humiliation. Oh, I know there must be some sort of financial angle, but still, 298 (0.59%) has got to hurt.

MISSISSAUGA:

In terms of the percentage of the vote, Kevin "the Poodle" Johnston is doing the best. As of this writing he has 2,201, or 13.3% of the vote with 309 polling stations out of 692 reporting. It doesn't look however as if there was much of a serious challenge to Bonnie Crombie who is running away with the election and will win a second term so perhaps given his self-promotion Johnston was able to get people to park their vote with him?

UPDATE: Since Brosky, Sears, and Fromm are non-entities, I'll just look at Goldy and Johnston.

With 465 polls out of 692 (67.2%) reporting, Johnston has 12,877 votes, or 13.4% of the total. He had been as high at 13.6%. Given he totaled a little over 700 votes total in 2014, I admit this is a bit of a surprise. I can think of some reasons to explain some of this (name recognition, the only person other than Crombie who ran in 2014, etc) but this is still a significant number for a man who is facing hate crime charges, at least one lawsuit for (I believe) defamation, and who isn't known to be particularly truthful. Still, this might be the high point of the man's life as he faces a criminal trial in a short time.

In Toronto, Goldy 25,576 votes or 3.4% with 1794 of 1800 polling stations reporting. I had spoken with friends and suggested she had an outside chance of between 3% to 5%, though I could have seen her getting less. Given the size of Toronto even that small percentage looks like a bigger number than anyone would like to see.

Still, rather than celebrating, her allies are actually quite upset including the man who coined the term "alt-right":

You see, her former alt-right supporters aren't happy that she began aligning herself with the JDL and Meir Weinstein or with non-white ethnic groups in order to broaden her base. Given her views it was a rather cynical and ultimately fruitless effort, but it did result in the rupturing of her previous relationships as evidenced by Richard Spencer's current tweet storm:

Which isn't to say that there aren't those who dispute Spencer's perspective:

What I am interested in though is what Canadian alt-right figures such as "Cracker Jack" (aka "Jack Tyler"), other members of ID Canada, and her supporters have to say about Ms. Goldy. I'll be posting an article on that soon, but if this tweet is to be believed there is already dissension in the ranks of Goldy's campaign:

Faith Goldy' Mayoral Run Described As A Twitter Vanity Campaign By Ezra Levant

As we enter the last 24 hours before Toronto's civic election, Faith Goldy is still complaining about being hard done by the media for not covering her mayoral campaign in the way she thinks they should:

And because of this she acts like a petulant child both in refusing an offer by the media to cover her campaign....

.... or "laughing" when a newspaper perceived as left of center endorsed the front runner but the right-wing tabloid you were once associated with through their failed news channel also endorses the front runner:

That's the sort of maturity one would expect from a six year old who, after crying about not being invited to the cool kids birthday party, refuses other invitations as if she is getting back at someone.

Or, perhaps even more apropos:

Aside from a few far-right figures and some columnists, most recently and shamefully Conrad Black who is white washing Goldy's record of support for white nationalism, no legitimate journalist left, right, or center gives her a chance of winning; few expect she'll poll more than 5% tomorrow. One would think her former place of work, the far-right propaganda site "Rebel Media" might offer a few lines of coverage at least, though they too have been mainly silent. This might be one of the reasons for this particularly passive-aggressive tweet:

Well there's a rather simple reason for this. Ezra Levant doesn't think she warrants coverage because he doesn't believe it to be a serious campaign, but describes it as a Twitter vanity project aimed at increasing her profile online.

H/T to Jonathan Goldsbie of "Canadaland" who posted the links to Levant's videos on Twitter.

On August 27, not long after she announced her candidacy, Levant was asked if he would support her. His answer was no and he then proceeded to give a surprisingly cogent rationale. He suggested that it wasn't serious, was (as already noted) a vanity project, that she has absolutely no managerial experience, she's made some incredibly poor decisions, and her embrace of white nationalism as reasons that he neither supports Goldy nor will spend much time covering her campaign:

ARC had also noted that her campaign seemed primarily as a means of self-promotion and to drive traffic to her YouTube channel, a belief I think is born out by the evidence that ARC and our supporters have uncovered:

Faith Goldy: The Female Misogynist

I never engaged with Faith Goldy in any way until a few months ago when this happened:

After Goldy began following me, I felt I would be rude if I didn't return the favor. It was then when I started commenting on her tweets providing some, shall we say alternative perspectives?

Wednesday morning as some far-right members of the Toronto Chinese-Canadian community (a small minority, mind you) were saying they were supporting Goldy in her quixotic candidacy for mayor, I innocently shared one of Ms. Goldy's previous comments regarding her views of non-European Canadians:

Seems I may have finally struck a nerve:

I was very sad, primarily because I hadn't time to share these as well....

.... and because I wasn't able to see this in real time:

Honestly though, considering her rank hypocrisy on matters regarding women, can we be at all surprised?
