Paul Hardcastle ‎– Just For Money (12″)

The Great Train Robbery was in the news at the time so we get a electro tribute from Paul Hardcastle – still using the same rhythm track on the old 808 too. He used the Train Robbery press cuttings on the picture sleeve Featuring the vocals samples from Bob Hoskins, Laurence Oliver, with Alan Talbot and Ed O’Ross from “Angel Heart” It was actually written with his manager’s brother Kim son of Simon Fuller.

“Back In Time” uses the Yamaha DX-7 and all it’s chimes and Hardcastle clean jazz funk with a weird ending of a chimes and phones and broken clocks….unexpected.

Perils Of Plastic ‎– The Love I Love (12″)

perils

Mike B uncovers another forgotten 80’s gem. From 1987 and grandiose synthpop from short lived duo “Perils Of Plastic”, elements of The Pet Shop Boys and going slightly into Euro Pop territory with producers, the Dutch duo Ferdi Bolland and Rob Bolland.

Steve Allen vocalist from Deaf School (late 1970s) and Original Mirrors (1980-1981) and ran the Eternal labels in the 90’s. He teamed up with ex- Elvis Costello and The Attractions keyboardist Steve Nieve

The 12″ is quite good, nodding to the stuff that ABC was doing at the time and “It’s A Sin” by PSB’s with lots of quirky breaks and lounge harmonies, fascinating.

The B-side is a piano-led, Blues ballad with elements of early Costello (via Paul Young) and produced with Mark Saunders.

Section 25 ‎– Looking From A Hilltop (12″)

So exactly 35 years ago this track hit my ears. The most electronic thing I had heard for ages. I thought it was European not a 100 miles from my home in the seaside resort of  Blackpool. I didn’t even know they were on Factory Records!!! Manchester + Blackpool = Synthcity Berlin.

I suppose it’s all about the sequencers and Sinn Drums, I’d not heard anything like it before. Had it on a John Peel Radio broadcast that I taped and picked it up on a CD compilation in the 2000’s. Layers of backward percussion and the voices – of Jenny Ross and Larry Cassidy (both sadly now departed) – float in and out over a proto-New Beat backing.

The Megamix is a dark and dubbier as I remembered with some added guitar. Pure Electro and a must listen through headphones. This remix was by New Order’s Bernard  Sumner and A Certain Ratio’s Donald Johnson.

The Clowns – My Bed Is A Boat (US 7″)

SAM_3851

American Alt. Rock and Obscure Band Of The Month award goes to quartet The Clowns from New Jersey. From 1987 and self produced on their own label. It was written by guitarist and vocalist Bob O’Gureck (who went on to be in the 90’s band Fossil with fellow Clown Randy Staley) it has elements of UK New Wave (The Cure, Bill Nelson)and was actually recorded in 1985.

Three, short, (2 sub-3 minute) tracks with swirly keyboards and drum machine on the main track.

“Carnival Of Love” waltzes along with psychedelic vocal harmonies with the lead Wurlitzer.

“Faces In The Trees” is the strongest track and longest track, acoustic guitar and fretless bass, synth strings and piano, it reminds me off John Foxx, Garden-era.

Maybe Matt could add some more info ?

Cry Before Dawn ‎– No Living Without You (12″)

Pop Rock from the four piece from Wexford in Ireland. A late single from 1989/90 and their last before being dropped by Major label, Epic.

Nothing at all wrong with it, melodic and well produced by Bob Kraushaar from a track. They had a great reputation as a live band

The traditional Irish elements can be heard on the B-side “Flags”,  produced by Paul Staveley O’Duffy and appeared as an Irish only release back in 1988. A good mix of styles.

The 12″ also includes  “Silly Dreams” from the soundtrack of the Irish film, The Courier from 1988. More melodic Rock and very rare too.

Rough Trade – Rescue Me (Canadian 12″)

Obscure Canadian New Wave from Rough Trade. Strident vocals from Carole Pope over a Pop funk backing with plenty of Horn action. One of their last singles from 1985 with a remix by French / Canadian Alain Bourque and originally from their last album “O Tempora! O Mores!” Jangly guitars, drum machine and bass bopping and good vinyl copy, apparently the CD re-issue was mastered poorly.

Bonus track is the inclusion of LP track “Aphrodisiac” , funk pop with a twangy synth bass, reminds me of Eurythmics.
