There are few displays of ethnomasochism and xenophilia more perverse than that of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – a day in January when white and black alike are meant to remember this hero of the Civil Rights era and to reflect on how far we have come as a country. MLK Day is an odd holiday to me, since it is as if the Byzantines had set aside a day to celebrate the heroism of Mehmed II, or some other Ottoman Sultan.
