No European can ever know the price, quality, and intensity of the love which a colonial brings to the history and the works of the Western culture. No matter how sensitive he is by nature, no matter how high the cultural-historical focus to which he contain and hold, the European—and I have in mind such beings as Goethe, Fichte, Carlyle, and Leonardo—must of necessity take many things for granted.
