Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, also known as Carrie Lam, GBS,JP (born 13 May 1957 in Hong Kong) is a civil servant from Hong Kong, currently the Chief Secretary for Administration of Hong Kong Government.
Carrie Lam attended St. Francis' Canossian College and the University of Hong Kong. As a student, Lam was an activist and advocated on behalf of the Yau Ma Tei boat people, who faced a difficult situation. She was active in the student union at the University of Hong Kong, where she switched her course of study from social work to sociology to help her understand society and graduated in 1980. She received honorary membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 2012. The only other person in Hong Kong who received the same honour is Sir David Aker-Jones, forner Chief Secretary.
Lam joined the Administrative Service in 1980. She has served in various bureaux and departments, including as Director of Social Welfare Department (2000–2003), Permanent Secretary for Housing, Planning and Lands (Planning and Lands) (2003–2004), Director-General of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London (2004–2006), Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs (2006–2007) and Secretary for Development (2007–2012). She was then chosen as the Chief Secretary for Administration by the new Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying.
Carrie Lam Lei (Traditional Chinese:林莉), born 25 March 1980 with family roots in Chaozhou, Guangdong, is a Hong Kong television presenter and actress affiliated with TVB. She was also Miss Hong Kong 2005 2nd runner-up.
Carrie competed in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2005 alongside Tracy Ip. They were in the same Top 40 group, The Modelling Group, competing to be in the top 20. In the end, Tracy won the crown while Carrie took 2nd runner-up.
Typically, TVB sent the second runners-up of Miss Hong Kong to represent Hong Kong in the Miss International Pageant. As Carrie is 2nd runner-up of 2005, she should have competed in Miss International 2005. However, due to the Miss International entry deadline to be before the Miss Hong Kong pageant took place, TVB opted to send Miss Hong Kong 2004 1st Runner-Up, Queenie Chu to the pageant instead.
She signed an artist contract with TVB after her reign was over and entered the entertainment business. She hosted the TVB show "E-Buzz", then left the company after her contract was over. She is now a full-time model with Starzpeople and occasionally works with TVB, hosting "Money Smart" and having a cameo appearance in Moonlight Resonance and Gem of Life.
