MAY 18: COLONIAL LEGACIES TODAY: INDONESIA AND THE NETHERLANDS

On May 18, the IIRE will host an event organized by Histori Bersama: This seminar will bring together two themes. One is colonialism in the Netherlands Indies as a form of racism, leaving ideological and mental legacies in the Netherlands and how those legacies can be identified, critiqued and overcome. The second is a critique of colonial policies and their impact on conditions in Indonesia until today. How are labor, agrarian, human rights and women's movements working to overcome those conditions? How can international collaboration on these issues be advanced?

James D. Cockcroft (26 October, 1935 - 16 April, 2019)

We were deeply saddened to hear about the passing of our friend James Donald Cockcroft on 16 April, 2019. James was a fellow of the IIRE, a scholar, activist, and author of many books, especially on Latin American politics. He lived his life to the fullest, writing and engaged in activism until his illness prevented him from continuing. We wish his loved ones, especially his partner and former IIRE co-director, Susan Caldwell strenght in dealing with this loss.

May 9: Feminism for the 99% - A Manifesto, with Tithi Bhattacharya

On May 9, the IIRE is hosting a discussion around ‘Feminism for the 99 %. A manifesto’ with three speakers:

Tithi Bhattacharya is one of the authors of the manifesto. Inspired by the new wave of feminist activism worldwide, Tithi and her co-authors Cinzia Arruzza and Nancy Fraser argue that feminism should not start – or stop – with the drive to have women represented at the top of their professions. Rather, feminism must focus on those at the bottom, and fight for the world they deserve.

New publication: Facing the Apocalypse. Arguments for Ecosocialism

We are facing a multifaceted threat to life the planet. From a defence of the remarkable ecological content of classical Marxism – lost during the 20th century to the rise of productivism – Facing the Apocalypse. Arguments for Ecosocialism by Alan Thornett,  is an appeal to the socialist left to take the ecological crisis far more seriously. Thornett engages directly with major debates such as the rising human population and carbon pricing that remain unresolved on the socialist left.
