Queer provocations festival

Ideas, imaginings, discussion at the Red Rattler this weekend
Queer Provocations is a two-day festival mixing critical workshops, panels, films, installations & performance from academic, activist, artist and other perspectives. It aims to provoke meaningful, ongoing debate and reinvigorate a sense of concrete queer political community. We're pleased to say that Jura will be having a bookstall at the event!

It starts on Friday night with Rebellious Words - a spoken word event featuring Indigenous and People of Colour voices. Workshops over the weekend include: decolonising queer, housing precarity, queering health/care & disability, geneaology (interrupting white possessiveness), critical ‘trans’ politics (anti-capitalist & global south perspectives), queer eco-activism in the Pacific, autonomous spaces experiments, alternatives to NGO’s, queer animal(ities), queer utopias: art practices & world-making, queers and ageing, and No Pride in Borders.

It's all happening at the Red Rattler Theatre, 6 Faversham St, Marrickville.
Tickets: $10 day pass, $5 single sessions, events: $5-15 sliding scale.

Racialised labour and dispossession

Red & Black Forum, 2pm Saturday 19 March at Jura
Bree Blakeman, Ph.D. candidate at ANU for Anthropology, is coming to Jura to discuss the history of racialised labour in the dispossession of Aboriginal people. Going deep into history Bree will start from the Doctrine of Discovery and make her way up to the recently abolished Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) relating how the labour performed by Aboriginal people contributed to their dispossession. Bree was an engaging and welcomed speaker at the Sydney Anarchist Bookfair last year and Jura is pleased to have her speak at 2pm on Saturday 19th March. Hopefully, you can make it down to this fascinating talk! Free event, followed by discussion. For more, check out Bree's blog.

Black Rose update

Our comrades are in the process of establishing a new space
Just under a month ago, our comrades from Black Rose moved out of their place at 22 Enmore Road Newtown. They'd been there for 9 years. It was a vibrant anarchist social center collectively run by a bunch of wonderful, dedicated, hard-working comrades. They ran events almost everyday, and managed to pay the exorbitant rent and maintain a radical presence in Newtown. It's a sad day for Newtown to see them leave.

However, Black Rose lives on! They're in the process of establishing a new place – stay tuned for details, or get in touch if you can help, via their facebook page. Jura is supporting them as best we can.

In an unpleasant incident, the night before the move a couple of fascists started a fight outside 22 Enmore Road. The fascist boneheads were Ralph Cerminara (Australian Defence League) and Dan Evans (Reclaim Australia). As reported in the media, emergency services were called, and the cops laid a number of charges.

Cerminara was previously arrested for trying to provoke a fight in Lakemba, and generally tries to make mischief by filming himself harassing Muslims and leftists on the streets. Recently Black Rose became a focus of his ire (e.g. this video).

Jura expresses our solidarity with all who fight against racism and fascism!

Recent anarchistic ideas online...

Why I choose optimism over despair – a new interview with Noam Chomsky.
It's rare for Chomsky to discuss both his linguistic and his political ideas in the same piece of work – and absolutely fascinating when he does! In this short new interview he does just that. If this whets your appetite, come and check out the large selection of Chomsky's books we stock at Jura – he truly is an amazing thinker, and one of the inspiring people of our time! Read the interview.

Rent strikes: ‘together we can defeat the housing market’
This article on the rent strike as a tactic today is definitely worth a read given the brutality of the Sydney housing market! Plus there's a great 12 min video too.

Congratulations to Jordan of the Axis of Awesome!
