The political battle over affirmative action, racial preferences and quotas enters a new phase in Washington. Organizers of Referendum-88 will begin a signature gathering drive to force a statewide vote on I-1000, which was just approved by the Washington Legislature at the end of the session in April. R-88 has until July 27th to submit 130,000 valid signatures from registered Washington voters. I-1000 reverses a voter approved Initiative-200 from 1998.

A Seattle Parks Department employee tells KOMO he's selling his family's home and moving them out of the city because of the homeless mess in their Lake City neighborhood. KVI's Kirby Wilbur interviewed the life-long Seattle resident, Bill Harmon, about the frustration that prompted his decision to flee Seattle. "There's multiple things that are leading us to move but this state of the city," Harmon says, "its nothing I wanna bring a kid up in. Ya know what I mean?

Spokane County's top law enforcement official, Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich, says he won't follow a new law signed by Gov. Jay Inslee that bans local law enforcement from asking about someone’s immigration status unless it’s part of a criminal investigation. The new law is known as a "sanctuary" protection which prevents local law enforcement from complying with federal detainer requests to hold illegal aliens after (a) criminal warrant(s) has been obtained.

After a pair of shootings in South Seattle wounded a woman and two children under the age of 10, two Seattle City Council members spoke out about their desire for tougher gun laws. All three victims between the two shootings are expected to recover. KING 5 reports that Seattle city council woman Teresa Mosqueda said the new shootings "underscores the deep need to move forward" on gun violence prevention programs and restrictions on firearms.

"We have someone (armed with a hand gun) in every building", says Toppenish School District Superintendent, John Cerna. "In some buildings we have multiple people... and nobody knows who they are except me. " Cerna spoke to KVI's John Carlson about the policy he is over-seeing after the Toppenish School Board approved a plan to allow administrators and staff--but not union teachers--to voluntarily train and be allowed to carry a concealed fire-arm on campus to deter school shootings.

One day after being swept off a Seattle sidewalk near Pioneer Square, homeless tents popped up again at the site that was cleared out following one of two drug ring busts just south of the downtown core. KOMO News reporter Jennifer Sullivan writes, tents returned Friday to a homeless encampment that was cleared by Seattle police one day earlier. People who work on the same Second Avenue South block say it’s a never-ending cycle.

Here's a little free advice for Seattle mayor Jenny Durkan: When you’re addressing a community meeting of neighbors and local business leaders angry and anxious about the crime linked to drug-addled homelessness in their area, don’t recite crime statistics. It doesn’t work, for three reasons. First, you’re essentially asking people to ignore the reality they see around them every day and trust data that may be technically accurate, but, to them, also irrelevant. People trust what they see.

"Its sneaky", says St. Rep. Jim Walsh (R-Aberdeen), "they know its wrong. "He's referring to the use of "ghost bills" in the Washington Legislative session that just concluded on April 28, 2019. The latest legislative session was controlled by Democrats who hold majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Ghost bills, Walsh says, are "sometimes called 'title only' bills.

Authorities now believe it was a black Mitsubishi Montero SUV that injured a 10-year-old girl in a hit-and-run in Parkland, WA, south of Tacoma. Seattle City Attorney, Pete Holmes, is calling for the resignation of municipal judge Ed McKenna after McKenna imposed an exceptional sentence on a repeat criminal offender, Francisco Calderon. Holmes was joined by public defender Anita Khandelwal in demanding the resignation of Judge McKenna. The letter to McKenna can be read here. According to KOMO News, Calderon, 55, has been convicted more than 70 times. He was in court in January for a sentencing hearing where McKenna presided.

Three stories this week all stem from the spider web of problems connected with the drug and crime problems around the Seattle region. The most devastating crime is a truck theft that turned to murder in Kent, WA and the murder suspect now admits he was high on "narcotics". In Bonney Lake WA, a man opened fire with a gun when he was roused after passing out from a meth high. One man nearby was wounded by the gunfire but is expected to survive.

Tukwila Police Department reported about this homeless/transient camp on their Facebook page:Today, our Community Police Team (CPT) along with Code Enforcement, Puget Sound Energy (PSE) and some local business owners surveyed a problematic transient camp in the 16400 blk of West Valley Hwy just off the Interurban Trail. The camp is not unlike many others scattered throughout cities across the region and state. Except that this one happens to sit on what is protected wetlands.

Monday at the East Hill Storage facility at 10625 SE 240th St. , said Detective Melanie Robinson of the Kent police. A suspect made a forced entry into the pickup as it was stopped at the gate of the storage facility.

Murray was Democratic Senator who spoke on the Senate Floor objecting to the legislation proposed by Senator Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska). Incarcerated prison inmates could be subjected to execution for aggravated murder committed behind bars in Washington if the State Legislature and governor approve a new bill by a Republican State Senator representing the Monroe area. SB 5364 bill is sponsored by State Senator, Keith Wagoner (R-Sedro Wooley), in what he says is an effort to protect prison correctional officers like Jayme Biendl, who was murdered by Monroe Corrections Center inmate Byron Scherf on January 29, 2011.

For the second time in one week an overnight tractor trailer crash in the construction zone of I-5 near the Highway 16 interchange grinds traffic to a halt. Just after 3:30 a. m. Wednesday, a semi struck the barrier on southbound I-5 at S. M. St. , blocking all lanes of traffic in both directions in a closure that lasted for several hours. Crews reopened the freeway around 7:10 a. m. Six crashes have occurred in this general area since late September, according to Washington State Patrol.

Five tractor-trailer crashes in five months along the same stretch of I-5 near the Highway 16 interchange in Tacoma. According to KOMO News, transportation officials say driver error is to blame. All the crashes are clogging traffic on an already packed part of I-5 which has been undergoing various phases of construction for years between the Puyallup River Bridge on the northeast edge of town and the Highway 16 junction.

Two new drug stories within 24 hours in Seattle indicate there is no slowdown in the area when it comes to local crime and health problems. Court papers say a Renton man who was captured after a high-speed car chase that finally ended near Seattle's Northgate Mall on I-5 had nearly half-a-pound (7 oz) of heroin and meth on him after he car-jacked a taxi in Lynnwood and fled the scene.

On the 19th day of the partial US government shutdown due to a Congressional and Presidential stalemate on border security, KVI host John Carlson interviews Washington Congressman, Adam Smith (D-Bellevue), who has been a vocal critic of Trump's border wall request but seemed to open the door to changing his mind. KVI's John Carlson interviews an on-again, off-again homeless man from Sumner WA who turned in a bag of money he found in the parking lot of the Sumner Food Bank. Kevin Booth made the fateful decision and explained the story to KVI. After food bank staffed checked the bag, they found it contained $17,000 in cash. It was turned over to Sumner Police and three months later, nobody stepped forward to claim the money.

A homeless man discovered a bag of cash near the Sumner Food Bank and turned it over to the food bank managers. The bag contained $17,000 in cash and after 90 days, no one has stepped forward, according to The (Tacoma) News Tribune, to claim the money. The cash windfall will now go to the food bank and be used to expand their operations. 32 year old Kevin Booth turned over the bag of money when he found it outside the food bank three months ago.

An aspiring political career in Seattle is on hold after city council candidate, Chris Rufo, says his wife and children were targeted with threats by political opponents. Rufo filed to run for city council against incumbent, Mike O'Brien, who represents northwest Seattle. Rufo tells KVI's John Carlson, "After the campaign started to build momentum... we got some positive media coverage, the hate started to come our way. "

Two gun rights groups, The National Rifle Association and The Second Amendment Foundation, are both suing Washington over the recent passage of I-1639 which state voters approved in the November 6, 2018 general election. I-1639 involves a variety of gun control measures sponsored by a group called Alliance for Gun Responsibility. Liberty Park Press columnist and North Bend, WA resident Dave Workman, tells KVI, "what this lawsuit focuses on is actually kind of clever.

Tuesday November 6, 2018 is general election day in Washington. Mail in ballots can be submitted to a US Post Office with no postage required but must be postmarked by the end of the day. A blue mail box may not be collected after 3p or 5p in the afternoon, so don't depend on a drop off at a mail box to be postmarked in time to be valid and count toward the 2018 election.

A new study from the American Association of University Women finds Washington State ranks among the worst in the nation for the gender pay gap. Women in Washington make 78-cents on the dollar compared to men... that ranks the Evergreen State 35th in the nation. While the gap hasn't grown in recent years, progress has slowed down. California and Washington, D. C. are tied at the top of the list, where the pay gap is 89-cents on the dollar.

Salaries for Washington's statewide elected officials like State Supreme Court Justices as well as others could soon go updouble digits based on a proposal from TheWashington Citizens' Commission on Salaries for Elected Officials. At stake are three competitive seats in Congress (just one, the 8th district in east King County, is in Puget Sound country), control of the Washington State House and Senate in Olympia, and four statewide ballot measures. Washington ballot initiative I-1631 asks voters to pay a higher tax on carbon fuel in an effort to emit less green house gases. The issue will be decided by Washington voters on the November 6, 2018 general election ballot. In a unanimous ruling the Washington Supreme Court today abolished the death penalty saying that the death penalty, as applied, violates the state Constitution. The ruling held that the eight people currently on death row have their sentences converted to life in prison. Five justices said the "death penalty is invalid because it is imposed in an arbitrary and racially biased manner. "

According to the stats from the real estate website Zillow and the contractor referral site Thumbtack. com, the down payment, coupled with cleaning costs appraisal, transfer taxes, homeowners insurance, title insurance, origination fee (among others) total $80,091 in Seattle compared to the U. Comments by Pres. Trump about supporting a clean environment have touched a nerve with Gov. Jay Inslee. Trump, in Las Vegas last Friday night for a candidate rally, told the crowd that he wants "crystal clean air" and "crystal clean water". Tacoma School District teachers vote today at 11am PDT on a new labor deal that will end an eight day strike and it would send students back to school for Monday September 17th, 2018. No details of the tentative deal have been revealed so far but a joint statement by the district and the teacher union said the deal will allow the district to recruit and retain strong teachers. However, it states without changes in state funding Tacoma Schools will "face painful cuts.

Now entering its second week, the Tacoma school teachers strike continues with no clear sign that it will be solved before early next week. And that's being optimistic. In an interview with Tacoma School District spokesman, Dan Voelpel, KVI's John Carlson said bluntly, "It seems to me you guys are losing the P. R. (public relations) battle. And one of the reasons why is that I don't think the general public has a clear understanding of the compensation of Tacoma teachers. "

Another new report details how bad Seattle drivers are. And that's one part of the problem with the 9th worst traffic in the nation (for 2018) when the city itself is only the 22nd biggest city in the country. But along with bad drivers, Seattle is plagued by a history of imbecilic freeway engineers. Their biggest sin for the I-5 corridor through Seattle is a series of on and off-ramps that are on completely opposite sides of the freeway.

Six teachers unions are currently striking in Washington, the financially disconnected claim some unions are making about the money other districts received, look at the Tacoma district, stats show that Issaquah school district got $2000 less per student than some districts, there's one factor beyond money that is a bigger influence on educational achievement.
