More than 120 people attended a rally to support 12 union members locked out by their employer, Langports Language College, on 24 May in Brisbane. The workers were locked out for 24 hours for wearing badges which read “3Rs: Reward, Respect, Recognise”.

MARXISM 2014 is Asia Pacific's largest left wing conference held every year over the Easter long weekend in Melbourne, Australia. The conference will feature over 70 sessions of discussion and debate, the Radical Reels film festival, a number of special art events, the second annual School of Rebellion for children and a range of international and local guest speakers, including: - BOOTS RILEY, hip hop artist (The Coup, Street Sweeper Social Club) and Occupy activist from Oakland, USA. - GILBERT ACHCAR, Middle East expert, academic and author of "The People Want: A radical exploration of the Arab uprising" from the UK. - GARY FOLEY, legendary Aboriginal activist. PLUS speakers from Egypt, Greece, the United States, the Philippines, West Papua, Mauritius and more... The conference will also feature the RADICAL REELS film festival. The documentary films screened will be introduced by filmmakers, participants and experts on their respective subjects. Films include: - A GOOD DAY TO DIE, following the life of Dennis Banks, founder of the American Indian Movement (AIM) and the struggle for the rights of Indigenous people in the United States. Featuring a link up with an American First Nations activist. - THE ACT OF KILLING, former Indonesian death squad leaders are challenged to re-enact for film their 1965 massacres of communists. Featuring a link up with director Joshua Oppenheimer and an introduction by academic Jess Melvin. - HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE, the story of how activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. With speakers from the Australian Gay Liberation movement. - THE TALL MAN, follows the murder of Mulrunji Doomadgee while in police custody and the Palm Island community's fight for justice. Featuring a participant in the trial of officer Chris Hurley. - PERSONS OF INTEREST, a look at Australia's secret history via the declassified ASIO files of Aboriginal activist, Gary Foley. Featuring Gary Foley and director Haydn Keenan. - ROCKING THE FOUNDATIONS, a historical account of the Green Bans and other historic activities of the NSW Builders Labourers Federation in the 1970s. Featuring director and former builders labourer, Pat Fisk. - CELLULOID COMRADES: AUSTRALIA'S UNION FILMMAKERS, a presentation of films by wharf-side unionists including the Waterside Workers Federation Film Unit from the 1950s. Introduced by academic and filmmaker Lisa Milner. Marxism 2014 will also host the second annual School of Rebellion, a radical program designed for children.
