2019 Volvo S60, V60 pricing and specs

Volvo has priced its BMW 3 Series-fighting S60 sedan and V60 wagon for Australia, ahead of the sedan's arrival in August.

The mid-sizers will be available in three trim grades, split across two powertrains: the turbocharged 'T5' 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol, making 187kW of power and 350Nm of torque, and the 'T8' Twin Engine plug-in hybrid, which makes a combined 311kW and 680Nm from its four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor.

Both S60 and V60 will have identical specs across their three model grades, starting with the Momentum, running through the Inscription to range-topping R-Design. The T8 plug-in hybrid is only available as an R-Design.

Pricing starts at $54,990 before on-road costs for the S60 T5 Momentum and $56,990 before on-roads for the equivalent V60. Standard kit is generous, despite a starting price that's more Peugeot 508 than BMW 3 Series or Audi A4.

All-wheel drive is included across the range, and the base model rides on 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheels. It gets autonomous emergency braking (front and rear), blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with steering assist, lane-keeping assist and parking sensors at both ends as standard, along with niceties like auto dimming mirrors, keyless entry and start, and a hands free boot.

Jumping to the Inscription adds $6000 to those starting prices. The extra spend gets you 19-inch alloy wheels, four-zone climate control instead of the dual-zone system offered in the Momentum, a head-up display and a surround-view camera.

Park Assist Pilot (Volvo speak for automated reverse parking), LED headlights which turn with the front wheels, front seat heating and power-extendable under-thigh support, along with a more upscale Inscription trim package for the cabin and exterior are all included as well.

The range-topping R-Design gets an extra 5kW and 50Nm in T5 trim, and is priced $4k higher than the Inscription. It gains a sportier styling package, matte-black 19-inch alloy wheels, an adaptive suspension system, R-Design seats, and shift paddles behind the steering wheel.

Jumping to the range-topping T8 Twin Engine powertrain bumps the S60 R-Design's price to $85,990 before on-road costs, and the V60's to $87,990.

That's a significant increase over the T5, but the plug-in hybrid T8 powertrain is significantly more powerful and (theoretically) more efficient. It pairs a turbo- and supercharged four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor which, in the Polestar Engineered guise we'll see Down Under, pumps out 311kW and 680Nm.

The 100km/h sprint takes 4.7 seconds, while pure-electric range sits at a claimed 45km.

The new S60 will be available in August, while the V60 is expected to touch down late this year.
