An Australian man has been charged with murder in Bulgaria.

John Paul Freeman was charged over the stabbing death of a 20-year-old man in the Bulgarian capital Sofia last Friday.

The 21-year-old has also been charged with the attempted murder of another man.

In a written statement tendered to the court, Mr Freeman said he had gone to the aid of a gypsy who was being attacked.

The 21-year-old told the court he had been serving in the British army since February.

He has been remanded in custody, although his lawyer says he will appeal the decision.
