Ever wondered what it would take for a straight man to go gay?

Well, according to 33-year-old male escort *Jake Ryan it’s pretty simple: cash — and lots of it.

“Put the dollars in front of me and just like anybody else in this industry I will do what I need to do for the cash,” says the Melbourne-based sex worker.

“Maybe with a bit of help from Viagra!”

While the world of male escorts catering to women is pretty niche — though getting bigger and gaining more acceptance — straight male escorts who are offering services to gay men is even more of a rarity, according to Jake.

“The ‘bisexual’ female escort is common in the industry,” he says.

“Yet bring in a straight male who is offering services to men and the pitchforks are out. In the male side of the industry it’s a different ball game. If you offer gay full service, the industry frowns upon it and the judging begins, but what’s the difference?”

THE CAREER CHANGE

Now escorting full-time for just over two years — and charging a whopping $1,500 per-hour premium rate to male clients — Jake’s path to escorting began via a female friend.

“She was working as an escort and she suggested me giving it a go,” he recalls.

“At first I didn’t really think much of it, but I was intrigued.

“Eventually I ended up accompanying her on a job where a couple had requested both male and female escorts. I was nervous, though to this day I still get butterflies in my stomach every time I meet a new client.

“But once I got past the nerves I had so much fun. The couple were great. We went out to dinner first and then when it came to the time to ‘play’ we already had a rapport.”

Put in touch with an agency who helped him get into escorting full-time, Jake left his job as a finance broker and fast-forward two short years, he’s now earning tens of thousands a week and is running his own agency (‘Jake Ryan’ is both a pseudonym as well as the escort agency brand, which has actually seen several male escorts inhabit the title role).

At 6-foot-four and endowed with bulging biceps and chiselled abs, his visual appeal is easy to understand. Indeed, according to his website Jake is the most successful male escort in the country, offering services to “individuals, couples and more”.

But what made him decide to expand his repertoire from ‘women only’ to both women and men?

“It started during a couples session,” he recalls.

“The guy ended up giving me oral sex and it wasn’t what I thought it would be like.

“Being a straight male I hadn’t actually thought about having sex with a guy before, and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I did think: ‘I can’t believe I’m doing this’, but then I didn’t see it as being ‘wrong’ either.”

While he’s naturally not attracted to men, the sex worker admits he still enjoyed his first guy-on-guy encounter.

“Yeah, it was quite pleasurable too. So I couldn’t see that negative aspect of it either. I can be attracted to anyone — it’s about personality more than anything, but it doesn’t mean I necessarily want to f**k them.

“Regardless of whether it’s a 72-year-old lady or a man, there are some things that can help if I’m having trouble getting an erection, Viagra for one. But there’s other things I focus on, for example, I’m a big dimples fan — if a girl or guy has them on their back, then I find that sexy.”

DRAWING THE LINE

Realising the possibilities of expanding his client base, Jake started to offer massage services to men about 15 months ago, and then, a few months later added limited sexual acts (“only receiving oral to begin with,” he says).

Then, last month, he began to offer what he calls “full service” to his male customers. However, even this has very definite restrictions in terms of what he will and won’t do.

“I will say this though: gay guys give way better blow jobs than girls. It is 100 per cent true!”

In fact, Jake says that a huge part of his appeal with his gay clients is that he’s straight. Describing himself online as a “rugged, ultra-masculine force” many of his clients relish the fact that he’s batting for the other team.

“It’s the forbidden fruit,” he says.

“My persona is the alpha male. In a booking with another man, I’m the one in charge and I’m the one that’s running the show. I do have that masculine, authoritarian role. Sometimes they might want to be dominated … they want it rough.”

While Jake is coy about both the number of clients he’s had over the last two years, and the number of clients he’ll service each week, he does reveal that they span the gamut.

“Clients range from early-20s to mid-60s,” he reveals.

“They’re uni students, lawyers, accountants, politicians; disabled and able bodied … there’s no set demographic, age, or size. It’s a big mix.”

BIG NAMES, BIG BUSINESS

Undoubtedly, a big part of his ongoing relationships with long-term customers is the discretion he provides alongside his services, especially with the “high profile” clients Jake alludes to.

“Very high profile,” he says, matter-of-factly. “Being discreet is part of the job. Especially when it comes to the clients who are on TV or in the papers. Likewise for us, because we all have our own lives outside of escorting too. A lot of escorts also have partners and kids — as do the clients we see. So I have to leave my judgment at the door too.”

Referencing these famous faces that use his services our chat turns to the glamour factor. Most of us will have heard tales of high-end escorts being flown around the world, so is it true? Turns out, yes.

“I’ve had private jets chartered for me,” he says. “Designer suits tailored for me … I’ve been taken to the likes of Africa for a week by a client too.”

NOT JUST SEX

Though advertising various different ‘experiences’, perhaps surprisingly the most popular request Jake has for his time is non-sexual.

“The most common booking is actually a massage, but then perhaps with an ‘extra’ on top,” he reveals. “But often clients don’t want sex at all, that’s pretty common. They may be lonely, they may want companionship, they may just want a cuddle. Being a ‘boyfriend’ to them, watching a movie, lying on the couch together … that’s a big thing across both my male and female clients.”

And though sex is, of course, on the menu, Jake asserts that there’s a lot more to the skills of an escort than just good looks and being able to, ahem, rise to the occasion.

“I find that people want the connection above the sex,” he says. “I rarely do half an hour bookings because people want more. They want to feel some intimacy.

“Being an escort isn’t as easy as it sounds. There’s a lot more than just giving someone a massage, or f**king someone’s brains out for an hour. You need to be able to hold a conversation, to be genuine and to have empathy.”

Jake says that none of his family know about his work life, and most of his friends are also in the dark.

“No, none of them know,” he says. “I have a couple of friends who know about this part of my life, and they also know that I’m seeing female and male clients. Being able to be open with these few people and to not be judged is really important.”

Escorting is not conducive to dating, however, but even if he met Miss Right, Jake doesn’t think he would quit his job.

“It’s a question I’d need to ask myself when I get to that point,” he admits. “Because I really love what I do. The money is fantastic and it really is a lot of fun and I really do enjoy it. I probably get to enjoy it a lot more than a plumber or an electrician, for example. I mean, I get to lie back and earn $500 for a guy giving me a blow job!

“But at the end of the day, it’s a job … a job that I’m very lucky to have”
