Letter from accused ‘terrorist’ John Zakhariev, currently on trial in Sofia, Bulgaria

UPDATE (June 6, 2017) : As expected, Zakhariev has been found guilty of ‘training with a Kalashnikov with the intention of carrying out a terror attack’ and sentenced to four years in jail (Australian-Bulgarian John Zakhariev sentenced for terrorism, Nick Miller, The Age, June 6, 2017).

John Zakhariev (above) is a 21yo dual Australian-Bulgarian citizen currently on trial in Sofia, Bulgaria. Arrested in September 2016, John is accused of undertaking weapons training in Bulgaria in order to join Daesh in Syria. He denies all charges.

I was recently forwarded the following letter from John which I reproduce below:

======

Since the 20th of September 2016 I have been stripped of my liberty and locked up in the heart of darkness otherwise known as Sofia Central Prison. The reason being that the Bulgarian authorities allege that I came to this country in order to train with firearms in order to fight with Islamic State or Daesh. To date, after nearly seven months, neither me nor my lawyer have seen or been presented with any evidence by the prosecution to back up these absurd allegations. One would expect that there would be a huge burden of proof on the part of the prosecution to back up her claims, which she herself has proudly boasted in court is ‘irrefutable’. Yet to date all that the court has been presented with in terms of evidence are as follows:

Firstly, workers from the legal shooting range I attended in Sofia (four times over a four week period), who all testified that my behaviour was perfectly normal and that they never had any issues with me as a client. Furthermore they all testified that I stopped attending the shooting range in early August 2016. This is in complete contrast to the claims of the prosecutor that I continued to attend until the 19th of September. Other witnesses to testify include a police provocateur who was sent to befriend me at the Banya Bashi Mosque in Sofia, Muhammad Dabbousi. In his witness statement he claimed that I said to him that I love Daesh and that me and him have to go and fight alongside them and yet in court he claimed that I was merely talking about them in a neutral manner. He made no mention of the alleged attempted recruitment or anything about me saying that I love them. He even expressed shock when the judge presented him with his original witness statement, leading me to believe that the police wrote his statement for him and asked him to sign it without even looking at it: an all-too-common practice here in Bulgaria with its law enforcement. At this point I wish to note that all the witnesses from the shooting range testified that I was always accompanied by a man to the shooting range. I never went alone. I knew this man as Peter Petrov, who I strongly suspect was a police agent.

Secondly, the prosecution presented to the court statuses which people on my Facebook friends list wrote about the ongoing war in Syria which was pro-opposition in nature. I will now make a point here which is that I never commented, shared or even liked these statuses, nor have I ever corresponded with the individuals who wrote them. The prosecution has further sought to use religious books on my computer as evidence of my support for Daesh even though a court-appointed expert himself testified that the books, though conservative in nature, do not in any way promote violence and cannot be linked to the ideology of ISIS. In my view this further shows the sheer Islamophobia of the case against me where anything even remotely connected to Islam is labelled extremist or jihadist. Yet even more disturbing for me is the court’s unwillingness to allow my defence to present any evidence in my favour. On the 21st of December I told the court that I had already left Islam months before my arrest. I further told the court evidence which could be found to support my claims including a 12 page email I sent to Canadian ex-Muslim Abdullah Sameer titled ‘Notes on Islam’ where I point out several flaws in the Islamic faith and also its claims of being a perfect faith valid for all times and places. I also told the court about some anti-radical Islamic literature which could be found on my computer and which were all downloaded in the same period beginning in early August ’til my arrest on September 20th. I also informed the court about emails I wrote to the Canadian Tourism College and International Guide Academy in Denver, Colorado enquiring about courses available in 2017, which clearly show my intention to continue my studies and not to join ISIS. And finally I told the judge that my Facebook correspondence would prove that I am indeed anti-ISIS since I spent a lot of time on it refuting the ideology of ISIS to its supporters. I even told the judge that I was also in touch with ex-Muslims weeks before my arrest discussing the possibility of setting up a Council of ex-Muslims in Australia similar to the one in the UK. The judge ordered that all this evidence be gathered, which raised my hopes of receiving a fair trial. Yet on May 16th 2017 when after many delays all this evidence had been gathered and presented to the court, the judge suddenly did a 360 and refused to even look at the evidence and calling the request of my lawyer to examine the Facebook correspondence, emails and for an examination of the books ‘groundless’ and ‘unnecessary’ since there was already enough evidence gathered by the prosecution seemingly ignoring the fact that they only ever sought evidence which would support their case.

This decision by the court confirms my fears since day one of my arrest that I would be subjected to a show trial and denied a fair hearing. I have resigned myself to the fact that I will be found guilty even though I will always maintain my innocence and insist that I was the victim of a poorly-attempted entrapment operation, whose pathetic nature would be almost laughable if its consequences weren’t so serious.

Continued Assaults on Asylum Seekers in Sofia Central Prison

[Below is an account by Jock Palfreeman of recent assaults by Sofia prison guards on imprisoned asylum seekers and others. On July 25 NYC ABC is holding a meeting to discuss Jock’s case; on July 27 MAC is holding a benefit gig to raise funds for the Bulgarian Prisoners’ Rehabilitation Association (of which Jock is Chairman).]

bpra

On the 6/7/14 at 8.30am the guard Peter Petrov performed the morning roll call, he entered Cell 11 and started shouting in Bulgarian, a language no one present understood. As the roll call finished for that cell he then started to assault a mentally ill man from behind as he was not moving fast enough. The mentally ill man is about 45kgs, about 55 years old and a citizen of Comoros. He then retaliated and slapped the guard back after the guard Peter Petrov hit him and kicked him again, the guard came at the Comoros Islander again and the African took a chair to keep the guard away from him. Three other guards came and only saw the Comoros islander with the chair and so they beat him too. Peter Petrov then ran out of the cell, locked all the cell doors and called for “assistance”. Forty guards came from two work shifts, from the Saturday evening shift and the incoming Sunday day shift (as now shifts are 12 hours). The forty guards summarily beat everyone in the cell – the man from Comoros, four Afghanis, one Pakistani, one Dutch man and an Algerian. They were not resisting in any way and most of the wounds inflicted by the guards are on their backs as they tried to cover their faces on the ground. All of these victims are incarcerated for illegal border crossing: they are all asylum seekers.

The man from Comoros was most badly beaten, with a cut face, bleeding eye, bleeding nose, cut lips and swollen and cuts and swelling to his head. All over his body was covered in welts from the batons. The Pakistani too had welts and pink bruises as did the others in perfect shapes of batons; the Pakistani received a cut head and several of the Afghanis, apart from the welts on their backs and forearms, had black and bleeding eyes. The seven men were beaten with batons, boots; they were stomped, hit and hit into walls and the ground.

The beating continued for about 20-30 minutes. The guards then indiscriminately started to break furniture used by prisoners for playing cards in the corridor.

After the bulk of the guards left, the guards called the prisoners Hisham Karmo and Budimir Kjovic, a Syrian national and a Serbian national. Together with the guards they wrote witness statements or “explanations” for the victims and intimidated the victims to sign the statements. The victims were told if they complained they would get extra prison sentences and that the guards would beat them again.

In these “witness statements” written by Hisham and Budimir, it states that the Comoros man attacked the guard unprovoked and the guard had to defend himself. A deal was struck between Hisham and Budimir and the guard Peter Petrov and the rest of the guards that this would be the official version that Hisham and Budimir would testify to but also help maintain through intimidation of victims.

Only the man from Comoros was allowed to see a doctor. As the official version of events did not include the other seven victims as having been assaulted they were not permitted to see a doctor for the entirety of Sunday. At 8.30pm the guards changed shifts and again the new guards would not allow the other 6 victims to see the duty doctor. On the same day as the assault the victims came to me (Jock Palfreeman) as the chairman of the Bulgarian Prisoners’ Association and as a known human rights activist and asked me for help. I immediately called the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee to inform their chairman Krassimir Kanev of the assault and he supplied valuable legal advice as to how to proceed.

With prisoners acting as translators the victims wrote real statements testifying the details of the assault free of intimidation by the prison’s auxiliary bullies. We brought many prisoners together and discussed how to proceed. Many prisoners supported the victims and we promised to support the victims if any prisoner working for the prison administration tried to intimidate them or use physical violence to silence them.

On 7/7/14 (the next day) members of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee came to meet with the victims. They took their statements and conveyed an official complaint to the prosecutor’s office. The members of the Helsinki Committee then personally escorted the victims to the prison infirmary and supervised as medical injury reports were written, although copies of said medical reports were not made or given to the victims or their representatives.

The evening of the 7/7/14 the guard Peter Petrov was returned to work in 10th and continued his attempt to intimidate me, Jock Palfreeman, as he had been informed of my complaint against him the previous Wednesday (on 2/7/14), after he assaulted me by kicking me with his boots, hitting me with a large metal key, pushing and pulling me in an attempt to provoke physical confrontation. However I did not react as the man from Comoros did; had I, I would have suffered the same fate as the other victims. I realised that this guard is highly violent and dangerous.

Whether it was his character or he was a racist or he was drunk or on drugs no one could say but I realised after he assaulted me on two separate occasions that the assaults would continue and only get worse. So on the 3/7/14 I sent a complaint to the Director of the prison Peter Krester and a request to have this violent and dangerous guard moved from our block.

No measures were taken and the guard Peter Petrov four days later subsequently attacked the man from Comoros and instigated the mass assault on the other seven victims.

I, Jock Palfreeman, have now again become a target of Peter Petrov, the guard and as of the date of writing this, 9/7/14, the prison authorities have failed to take any measures to prevent the guards from assaulting prisoners or to protect me or the other 8 victims.

The assault on the 8 men was extremely vicious and so I started the explanations from that point as opposed to the first assaults upon myself.

PS.

On the 10/7/14 (Thursday), the guard Peter Petrov was moved to a different part of the prison.

On the 14/7/14 representatives from the Ombudsman’s office entered the prison to conduct an investigation into the mass assault, they met with the victims and witnesses and briefly with myself.

On the 16/7/14 the vice-minister of justice, responsible specifically for the running of prisons, met with the victims of the mass assault (although there are concerns about the vice-minister’s personal connections with Budimir Kjovic, who was also called to the meeting as a friend of the vice-minister of justice).

On the 17/7/14 the state prosecutor met with the victims to collect their statements from them personally.

The continued pressure and intimidation from the prisoners Budimir Kjovic and Hisham Karmo upon the victims to give false testimonies is a continuing concern, not to mention their attempt to also intimidate me into not showing solidarity to the victims. It’s just another example of mafia criminals working with the state apparatus of oppression. The prison allows these bullies to continue their drug businesses within the prison, the prison staff take a cut and in exchange it is in their interest to protect the prison administration and guards as they provide the protection for their business.

Earlier this year a director Yosofifov, director of work and pay of Sofia Central Prison, was arrested along with the friend of Budimir Kjovic for trafficking contraband into the prison. Earlier this month the director Yosofifov was formally fired for violating the ethics code.

There can never be any compromise with violators of human rights and mafia!

When injustice becomes law resistance becomes duty!

“Gypsies into soap”?

It’s interesting times in Bulgaria, last week witnessing “the country’s worst outbreak of unrest in more than a decade”. According to one report (Bulgarian Police Arrest 168 People in Second Night of Violence, Elizabeth Konstantinova, Bloomberg Business Week, September 28, 2011):

The violence was triggered after Roma clan leader Kiril Rashkov in the Katunitsa village, near the second city of Plovdiv, was blamed for the death of 19-year-old Angel Petrov during the weekend, Vesselin Vuchkov, deputy interior minister, said yesterday. Villagers set on fire several of Rashkov’s cars and houses in retaliation.

The New York Times (Anti-Roma Demonstrations Spread Across Bulgaria, Matthew Brunwasser, September 27, 2011):

The news media referred to the protests as “pogroms.” The protesters shouted racist slogans like “Gypsies into soap” and “Turks under the knife.”

The police guarded entrances to Roma neighborhoods across the country as demonstrators announced protests on Tuesday evening in 20 cities, including Sofia, the capital. Roma men are reported to have taken up clubs and axes in response to rumors of invasions by boneheads.

The English-language blogger ‘Sofia Notes’ has more disco here and here.

A Presidential election is scheduled for October 23. The Roma-hatin’ ultra-nationalists of National Union Attack/Ataka are standing Parliamentary leader Volen Siderov (Bulgarian anti-Roma protests escalate, Valentina Pop, EU Observer, October 3, 2011): “Ahead of the presidential elections on 23 October, far-right Ataka party leader Volen Siderov tried to capitalise on the tensions and called for the death penalty to be reinstated and for Roma “ghettos” to be dismantled.” Both Turks and the United Nations are reportedly worried about the growth in anti-Roma and, potentially, anti-Turk sentiment in the country ahead of the elections.

antifa notes (december 6, 2010)

Australia

Not exactly a roaring success for the Australian Protectionist Party in Newcastle on the weekend: just four anxious souls rocked up on Saturday to their protest against the Islamification of Newcastle, two of them party members. Spokesperson Nicholas Hunter-Folkes is pretty cool though; meathead held a sign reading “LISTEN TO THE MAJORITY NOT THE MINORITY” — all the while being outnumbered by a token number of counter-protesters.

D’oh!

Said one of two concerned local residents to attend the rally:

“We’re here to protest because we don’t I don’t like it I don’t [indecipherable] country being taken over by Muslims stupid politicians let them get away with everything it’s not right.”

Quite.

Poor turnout for anti-mosque rally
Naomi Davidson
Newcastle Herald
December 3, 2010

A rally opposing a mosque in Elermore Vale was overshadowed by anti-racism protesters at Civic Park today.

But organiser Nick Folkes denied the Australian Protectionist Party was opposed to the mosque on race grounds.

Just four members of the party turned up to protest the proposed mosque.

The protectionist party handed out flyers with an image of a Muslim man holding a sign that said ‘‘Islam will dominate the world’’.

The flyer stated traffic and parking, 5am wake-ups, a drop in house values, migration into the area and extremist elements would be the effect of a mosque in the suburb.

A small group of anti-racism protesters stood behind the party armed with signs stating ‘‘It’s a cowardly racist who hides behind cars.’’

For unknown reasons, Perth plasterer Paul Innes has pissed off from convicted terrorist Don Black’s Stormfront website, for which august forum he was previously the token Aussie moderator (his place taken by a Damn Yankee). Presumably, Paul is too busy planting trees in his Pioneer Little Europe to persist in berating other bigots for misspellings… or something.

Otherwise, Canadian Holocaust denialist Paul Fromm is on tour, and will be speaking in Melbourne on December 11.

Bulgaria

Australian anti-fascist Jock Palfreeman’s appeal against his unjust sentence is continuing. Please consider supporting Jock. For moar details see the Free Jock site.

Last week (December 2) Roma again were attacked by right-wing radicals (Rechtsradikale greifen in Sofia Roma an und verletzen einen schwer, AFP):

Radical right-wing skinheads have attacked in the Bulgarian capital Sofia two young Romas and, besides, one of them seriously injured. As the urban authorities informed on Friday, the attack occurred on the Thursday evening in a bus in the city center. The serious casualty has been delivered with a cranial break and a cerebral injury to the hospital, however, is not in mortal danger. The other victim has suffered no heavy injuries. Members Roma-[minority] have to suffer in Bulgaria from discriminations and are the purpose of violent raids over and over again.

Greece

Recent municipal elections in Athens witnessed widespread abstention–roughly two-thirds of the electorate didn’t bother to vote during a second round–and also an apparent swing to the left. In addition, for the first time a member of the neo-Nazi groupuscule Golden Dawn was elected. The ever-reliable and always-outrageous blog From the Greek Streets has loads moar on social struggles in the birthplace of democracy. Otherwise:

Attacks On Immigrants On Rise In Greece

1/12/2010- A wave of violent attacks against immigrants by suspected right-wing extremists has put Muslims and the police on alert in rundown parts of Athens with burgeoning migrant populations. Immigrants have been beaten and stabbed near central squares, and several makeshift mosques have been burned and vandalized. In the most grievous attack, at the end of October, the assailants locked the door of a basement prayer site and hurled firebombs through the windows, seriously wounding four worshipers. “The attacks are constant — I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Naim Elghandour, who moved to Athens from Egypt in the 1970s and now heads the Muslim Association of Greece. “I used to be treated like an equal. Now I’m getting death threats.”

Poland

Swedish nutzi Anders Hoegstroem has plead guilty to stealing a sign from Auschwitz (Neo-Nazi pleads guilty to theft of Auschwitz sign, Digital Journal, November 26, 2010) and will spend some months of quiet contemplation in a Swedish prison for his efforts. Also in Poland, members of reich ‘n’ roll band Tormentia were subjected to some harsh criticism by music lovers while on their way to a gig in October.

Russia

Charles Clover has written a lengthy article for the Financial Times on ‘The skinhead terrorists’ (December 3, 2010). Paying particular attention to the murderous antics of one gang of boneheads called the ‘National Socialist Organisation’ (NSO) (aka ‘National Socialist Society’), Clover notes that it was likely funded by some VIPs, and functioned with the state’s blessings, which fact is also meant to be surprising rather than mundane (The Other Russia is one source that provides copious documentation of the Russian state’s otherwise unremarkable gangsterism; the recent Wikileaks of US State Department dox gives the official seal of approval). Clover quotes one former fascist leader who gets straight to the point:

…the problem that the authorities have with groups such as his is not their violence, but the prospect of the political competition they present. There is an implicit contract between bonehead gangs and the authorities under which the state turns a blind eye to violence by bonehead groups, in exchange for their not getting involved in politics.

A few weeks ago the fifth anniversary of the murder of Russian anarcho-punk Timur Kacharava took place (Five Years On, Antifascists Mourn Kacharava’s Death
Sergey Chernov, St Petersburg Times, November 16, 2010):

As antifascist activists marked the fifth anniversary of the murder of the 20-year-old antifascist activist and punk musician Timur Kacharava on Saturday, they claimed that they are under increasing pressure from the police, while the threat of attacks from nationalist radicals has not decreased…

Other Russian antifa to have been murdered in the interim include Alexander Ryukhin (April 16, 2006), Ivan Yelin (January 15, 2007), Ilya Borodaenko (July 2, 2007), Ovanes Ajriumian (October 20, 2007), Fedor Filatov (October 10, 2008), Anastasiya Baburova and Stanislav Markelov (January 19, 2009) and Ivan Khutorskoy (November 16, 2009).

chtodelatnews is another good sauce of infos, as is The SOVA Center for Information and Analysis and avtonom.org. Note that Russian police have somehow found time in their busy schedule to prosecute some artists for taking the piss.

Orange Leeds

Less than a week after the BNP’s success in the Euro election, in Leeds Orangemen marched for the first time in 40 years. Funnily enough, the march took place only an hour or two after ‘Unite Against Fascism’ organised a rally in the same part of town; alternatively — according to antifa.org.uk — the UAF march “led by [Weyman] Bennett, was halted by the UAF on the request of the police, so that the first Orange Order parade in 40 years could go ahead on time in the same location”.

Call me a crazy Jewish anarchist / call me a gay Nazi / don’t call me late for dinner, but this sort of behaviour is not usually understood as constituting ‘militant anti-fascism’.

Historical note:

America and France, and the Spectre of Republicanism

In 1778, when the regular garrisons had been depleted for service in America, there arose in Ireland the (overwhelmingly Protestant) Volunteers movement, ostensibly to defend the country from foreign invasion. Soon the Volunteers began to alarm the government by their obvious republican and independentist tendency and, above all, by their declarations of support for equal rights for Catholics. In December 1791, the British government proposed that the Irish Parliament allow the elective franchise to sufficiently propertied Catholics. The calculated effect was that the Catholics of “the most consequence and property” would become “sharers in” the system of social control. Within little over a year, the government and the authoritative negotiating team, known as the Catholic Committee, reached an agreement that in effect ended Catholic collaboration with the Volunteers in exchange for the passage of a law in 1793 (33 Geo. III, c. 21 [Irish Statutes]), giving Catholic forty-shilling freeholders the right to vote in elections of members of the exclusively Protestant Irish Parliament. A companion act (33 Geo. III, c. 22 [Irish Statues]), established an Irish militia of about fifteen thousand (increased to nearly twenty-two thousand two years later) which, although officered by Protestants, had a predominantly Catholic rank and file.

Thrown on the political defensive by the cumulative effect of this shift in the strategic orientation of the British government, the forces of Protestant Ascendancy rallied behind the racist tradition symbolized by the Dutch William of Orange (“of glorious… and immortal memory”) who, as King William III of England, had defeated the Irish and Catholic cause in 1689 and ushered in the long night of the Penal Laws.

The first to rally were labouring-class Protestants in 1795, who sensed a creeping Catholic Emancipationism threatening their racial privileges — such as their preferential tenant status and the right to keep and bear arms. The surge of Protestant bigotry took organized form with the establishment of the Orange Order, following an armed clash between Protestant and Catholic tenants in County Armagh in September 1795. This event was immediately followed by a terror campaign which drove hundreds of Catholic families from their Ulster homes into stony Connaught. Viewed at first with a considerable degree of upper-class suspicion for its lowly origins, Orangeism gained in respectability, especially among the diehard Protestant Assembly elements of the ruling class who had not yet got the message that it was time for a change. In the Rebellion of 1798, the Orange Order, now formally constituted in Ireland and Britain, played a key role in splitting Protestants from the equalitarian stand of the United Irishmen, and in the form of the armed and mounted yeomanry units served also as repressive auxilliaries in the repressive operations of the military.

As for Weyman:

‘BNP should be confronted to prevent them gaining power’
Weyman Bennett
The Times
June 13, 2009

The recent electoral gains by the British National Party have triggered debates over how best to oppose it. Unite Against Fascism (UAF) believes that the BNP is a fascist organisation, and as such it should not be treated with the respect one accords to democratic parties. The BNP should be physically confronted wherever it tries to organise. It should be not be accepted as a legitimate political organisation, or mollycoddled with interviews and airtime. It should driven out of our political life…

Weyman Bennett is Joint Secretary of Unite Against Fascism, and a member of the Central Committee of the Socialist Workers’ Party. (On previous criticism of his special brand of activism, see Reflections & analysis: the WOMBLES, the ESF & beyond, WOMBLES, December 2004 // Unite Against Fascism is a weird mob, August 1, 2008; BNP’s RWB vs SWP’s UAF, August 21, 2008.)

SWP vs. BNP

The SWP would appear to be in something of a bind with regards ‘anti-fascism’. On the one hand, it closed down its front group the ‘Anti-Nazi League’ in the early ’90s, only to re-boot it several years ago upon the realisation that while the NF and other fascist groupuscules had faded away, the BNP was growing. But organising pop concerts and seeking the endorsement of TV personalities — and even British Labour — has hardly been a resounding success — in fact, quite the opposite. At the same time, while the SWP has careened its way from the ‘Socialist Alliance’ to ‘Respect’ to the ‘Left List’ to ‘Left Alternative’ — gaining less votes at each turn — the BNP has gained hundreds of local councillors and now representation in the European Parliament. As the fortunes of the SWP have dwindled, so those of the BNP have increased. Partly for this reason, the SWP is once again appealing to other leftists to join them in a NEW! IMPROVED! electoral coalition.

The non-confrontation in Leeds also follows hot on the heels of an egg-throwing incident outside the British Parliament involving a one-eyed Welshman, a handful of his thugs, and a few score journalists and protesters: no yolk. A faint echo, perhaps, of a previous militancy which, ‘ironically’, resulted in a purge of the SWP of its militant, ‘squaddist’ elements. (See : Interview from Beating Fascism: Anarchist anti-fascism in theory and practice, January 10, 2006 | Fightdemback interview with Dave Hann, co-author No Retreat, July 11, 2006 | Ian Stuart : Zero of the White Race, Skrewdriver, and “The Battle of Waterloo”, September 25, 2006 | Bash the Fash, June 12, 2008. Of course, the egg-throwing incident brings to mind a somewhat similar incident outside Brunswick Town Hall in March 1994, in which Michael de Brander — the then fuehrer of local fascist groupusucle ‘National Action’ — expertly managed to catch an egg in his mouth: footage of which featured as ‘Goal of the Week’ on that week’s edition of The Footy Show. See : Anti-fascism in Melbourne: 1990s, March 20, 2007.)

Belfast, Northern Ireland/Six Counties

In Belfast in Northern Ireland / the Six Counties, 100 Roma (‘Gypsies’) from Romania have been forced to flee their homes following an assault by incredibly brave men determined to purge south Belfast of Those Thieving Gyspy Bastards. According to Robert Booth (The Guardian, June 17, 2009), Suspicion of ‘anyone different’ is a legacy of sectarianism. Further, “A far-right website published pornographic images of Chinese women linked to abusive remarks about [one woman] and she said she had been kicked in the street”.

Racist gang attack family’s home
BBC
June 15, 2009

A Romanian family has been targeted in a series of racist attacks in south Belfast.

A gang smashed windows and terrorised pregnant women and children in attacks on two houses on Belgravia and Wellesley avenues…

It has been claimed that up to 20 people gathered outside the properties which were attacked.

It is also alleged that those involved shouted Combat 18 slogans and a letter containing text from Hitler’s Mein Kampf was pushed through the letterbox of one of the properties.

There have been racial tensions in the area since trouble erupted at a World Cup qualifier between Northern Ireland and Poland at Windsor Park in March.

A number of migrant families subsequently decided to leave their homes.

The involvement of ‘Combat 18’ in the attacks has been disputed, although it is entirely possible that those shouting their silly little racist heads off have more than a passing familiarity with both the term and its organisational history (in which context, see also : Extremist Crimes: Neo-Nazis With Bomb Parts in Alabama, Maine, Intelligence Report, Summer 2009). It has also been alleged that some of those who participated in a ‘riot’ in Luton in May were somehow associated with C18 (Unmasked: The football hooligans behind last weekend’s bloody protest against a Muslim war demo, Paul Bracchi, Daily Mail, May 29, 2009); certainly, the relationships between fascist groupuscules, parties such as the BNP and Loyalism have been well-documented in the past.

Video of racist yoof and other details concerning the attacks available via u.tv. In a gesture of solidarity with the fleeing yoof, u.tv has obscured their faces [!] — while failing to do the same in the case of the anti-racist mob.

At present, it appears that the fascist vigilantes may have won this battle: the Romanian families have left their houses, police have dispersed supporters, and the usual truckload of denunciations of racism have been emanating from various political worthies.

Still, the situation is not as bad as, say, Rostock (Germany) in 1992/3

Melbourne, Australia

The above brings to mind the efforts of local boneheads, especially Melbourne Hammerskin Jesse, who together with Belgian boneheads belonging to nutzi band ‘Kill Baby Kill!’ has recorded the No.1 Smash Hit ‘Oh No Here Comes An Abo!’. Jesse and his mates will be gathering in Melbourne on September 12 this year to prance about in front of swastikas and other nutzi kitsch, just as they did at The Birmingham Hotel in 2005 and 2006. Funnily enough, at the 2006 gig, a woman was targeted by similarly brave men:

Blondien (not her real name) says she was walking alone to her car on Johnston Street the same night when she was surrounded by about seven men. She says the men screamed abuse at her, calling her a black c..t and forcing her to repeat the insults.

“It’s disgusting that people would single out one person and you have to say stuff about your race to get out of it,” Blondien said…

Hotel co-owner Gary (who wouldn’t give his surname) said: “I’m not getting involved in someone else’s bullshit.”

On the bright side, local punks rallied ’round Gary, but, sadly, the pub changed hands following the institution of a boycott.

As for Those Thieving Gyspy Bastards, the anarchist faggots belonging to Amnesty International UK (who really should be killed) have complained (Northern Ireland: Attacks Against Roma Communities are Unacceptable and Must be Stopped Says Amnesty, June 17, 2009):

The latest attacks on Roma people in Northern Ireland are part of a trend of growing abuses against the Roma across Europe, Amnesty International said today. The organisation is urging the authorities to investigate urgently the series of racist attacks which forced over 100 Roma people from Romania to flee their homes in Belfast and to protect them from future attacks.

According to news reports, attacks in Northern Ireland against Roma people from Romania have increased in recent months – some of them have been attacked verbally and physically, and bricks have been thrown through their windows. An anti-racist rally in the city on 15 June was attacked by youths chanting neo-Nazi slogans [the anti-racists chased them away]. On the evening of 16 June, a group of Roma initially sought refuge in the City Church in South Belfast, and have subsequently been transferred by Northern Ireland authorities to temporary accommodation in a leisure centre elsewhere in the city…

Standing up to such bigotry and violence can, however, have terrible consequences: such is the case of Australian citizen Jock Palfreeman, currently imprisoned in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he is facing charges of murder and attempted murder following his attempt to intervene on behalf of two Roma being assaulted by a racist gang. Jock — like others — has seemingly been abandoned to his fate by Australian authorities, although the recent broadcast of an episode of Foreign Correspondent focusing on his case may have alerted at least a handful more individuals to his plight. In the meantime, it’s highly likely that more attacks will be launched against Roma (and anarchists and Jews and leftists and queers and and and) by far right militants, emboldened by their comrades’ entry into the European Parliament.

On a more positive note, The Anti-Racism World Cup will be taking place July 31–August 2 @ Donegal Celtic Football Club.
