Settler comrades referring to the "Oka Crisis" and the 30 year anniversary today.

Remember what Mohawk spokesperson Ellen Gabriel always says. Refer to it more ...appropriately and more accurately as the 1990 Siege of Kanehsatà:ke and Kahnawake, and use Kanien'kehá:ka names. It wasnt a "crisis;" it was a siege - a 78 day standoff with fully armed Canadian military forces using gunfire and concussion grenades against soveriegn people. Also Oka is the name of the town, not the Kanien'kehá:ka place name.

Hands raised to one of my first mentors on these lands, Ellen Gabriel, for her courage and teachings that changed my life and the entire genocial Canadian landscape. Much power and respect to Kanien'kehá:ka peoples on the rolling blockades today and who are still fighting for land and jurisdiction.

Take the time to watch Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance by Abenaki filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin, available for free at NFB and one of best movies ever made in Canada. Also check out the extensive archive at Warrior Publications, thanks to movement archivist and Kwakwaka'wakw artist extraordinaire Gord Hill - who also created this image from the iconic photograph of the faceoff between Anishinaabe warrior Brad Larocque (not Mohawk warrior Ronald Cross aka Lasagna whom the media first misidentified the photo as being) and Canadian soldier private Patrick Cloutier (later discharged from the army for impaired driving and leaving the scene of an accident, and then later staring in a film that parodied the siege).

Always remember and honour the siege; long live Indigenous resistance!

The photos of the DA's office in Salt Lake City where people are protesting the police murder of Bernardo Palacios-Carbajal are stunning. This is the most exciting use of painting in protest (or anywhere else) that I've seen in quite some time.
