Do you jog? Or does everyone now say that they ‘run’? And when did that change happen without me noticing? I never really have. Never found it enjoyable. What I did enjoy was H3X Dysphoria’s track Cyber Runner.

This is a piece of top quality synthwave.  H3X Dysphoria (Alfred Farrugia from Malta) says he makes music for hackers. This is more fitness regimen for robot athletes. A short synth symphony that goes from a standing start, into a jog and eventually a joyful sprint for the line. A medal winning performance, enhanced with synths on steroids and a perfectly positive air.

Love is a curious thing. The way it can spring up on you, even unexpectedly. And in the strangest places. And the coup de foudre it creates. All of that and more from Lemon Melon on their new track Spring Day Song (I’m Not In Love Anymore). A perky indie acoustic guitar and shuffling electronics track. An indie chill kind of approach. This melts the hardest of hearts. Whether you’re falling in love, in love, or falling out of love this is for you. Even manages to make pitched up vocals acceptable. Love is madness, I tell you. And you’d be mad not to listen to this.

The warmth of the memories with: Datach’i – Rockledge 3A #idm #downtempo #ambient #electronic #NewMusic

IDM is all too often aimed at the head not the heart. But some IDM, of which I guess Aphex Twn’s Analogue Bubblebath is an example are aimed as much, if not more, at the heart. Datach’i offers another on Rockledge 3A from his forthcoming album Bones on Planet Mu Records.

Datach’i (Joseph Fraioli) is a long-standing artist from LA, USA. Albeit this is the first I’d ever heard of him. And Rockledge 3A is a wonderful surprise. It has some intricately awkward beats but welded to warm analogue sounding synths that give this track a surprising emotional punch. There’s a real warmth to the track coming from the synths, despite the clatter of the beats. Perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that there’s emotion here since the album was made after his father’s death. This track is brilliantly balanced in its approach. A sort of more human version of early Squarepusher. The album – Bones – from which it is taken isn’t out until July but can be pre-ordered here.

Dark night with: Woeful Bat – Sound Slug #DarkElectronic #techno #electro

•June 4, 2019 • Leave a Comment

It’s a morning start in the dark before daybreak for me. So, here’s some dark electronics from the UK’s Woeful Bat and a rich dark track Sound Slug. This is electronic sludge and slime. An unsettling dark ambient that’s as much techno as anything. Electronics whine and wail in a Stygian gloom. Beats crash around in treacle. Synths try to find their way in the darkness striking optimistic notes but are inevitably a bit lost sounding. This is wonderful stuff in which to wallow.

Monday morning chill with: buzz cut, and Arun #chill #tripHop #techno #NewMusic #electronic

Still sunny here but back to work this Monday morning. Let’s have a couple of chilled tracks from buzz cut, and Arun.

buzz cut is from the USA but beyond that I know nothing. The track is Forever (Bootleg Edit) of which the only thing I know if that buzz cut says it’s an, “electronic song made with found sound samples!” What I can tell you is that this is a lovely dreamy, drifting piece of trip hop. The title sample floats around the track giving it an endless feel that stretches way beyond the 6 minutes of the track. Beats clatter around in dub ricochets. Synths wander up and down in slow procession. Properly languid track.

Arun from Kiel, Germany offers Life Of A Flower. He’s clearly taken with all things Eastern, since he explains that his artist name “…is derived from the language Sanskrit and means dawn, reddish glow in the morning sky.” The track sits somewhere between trip hop and slow techno. It’s built around an Asian spoken word sample talking about the life of a flower. Gives the track a wandering, widescreen sensation. A tribal sense of dusty plains and open spaces. This is about the vastness of everything in the tiniest of things. A meditative track that wants you to look within for the answers.

Ambient Sunday with: Brussels Sprouts, and El Modena #drone #ambient #chill #electronic #NewMusic

The wind is barely there. Clouds are barely moving. Sun is shining weakly. A perfect morning for some drone and ambient from Brussels Sprouts and El Modena.

Brussels Sprouts is the curious choice of artist name by Максим (Max) Смородин from St Petersberg, Russia. The track is Harmony Behind Simulation. Max says he writes instrumental tracks / soundtracks. And this is a bit of a soundtrack drone tune. Slightly fragmentary at less than three minutes it still manages to pack in a lot of delicate emotion. Tones are droned, held and toned. Sounds whoosh about in a sad but exciting way. And yet it manages some synth melody to tug at the heartstrings. This doesn’t need the accompanying imagery but it does inspire some in your mind. A perfect way to start the day.

El Modena (Evan O’Neil) is from the USA and offers Lagoa (tr. Lagoon). I had to look this up but Lagoa is a municipality in the southwestern part of São Miguel Island in the Azores. This is relevant as the track includes field recordings from a pottery factory made as part of El Modena’s travels in the Azores. The track itself is a six minute meditation piece focused on memory. Opens with a slowly unfolding sound collage underpinned by throbbing drone tones. Eventually breaks out into some piano led ambient dreamscapes. This is about remembering and also not remembering. A kind of muscial interpretation of aphasia perhaps? Six minutes of tones and piano pass but as if in a trice. A delight.

The track is taken from the album The Expanded Present

House music all day long with: Vaughn Anton, Pinz & Pelz, and INVŌKER #house #acid #electronic #NewMusic

The sun is shining. It’s supposed to be a hot day here in London, so let’s have some fresh house tracks for the park or the barbecue from Vaughn Anton, Pinz & Pelz, and INVŌKER.

Vaughn Anton is from Los Angeles, California. The track is the tech house / techno cross of Contact. This invokes Chicago, Detroit and Berlin in its world view of techno house. But there’s also something of the sunshine in the track. A bright crispness that smells of sunshine and can’t quite succumb to the needs of Berlin cool noir. As Vaughn says of the track it’s, “Deploying itself as an exercise in deep synth-work and crisp percussion.” And it’s those synths that makes this track really work. Quite subtly done they come from the back to play the sweeper role in pressing the track forward to goal. Lovely, lovely track.

Next, Australian/German duo Pinz & Pelz. Another that mixes cool with sunshine. For House Diva they say, “It’s a deep house track inspired by mid 90s underground dance producers like Fresh & Low, Playin’ 4 tha City and Slam but moulded to suit a more modern club experience.” There’s certainly a 90s feel in the deep house stabs of the track. And that gives it a lovely dreamy air, perfect for a summer’s day. But the track offers a wrong-footing moment with the addition of some fabulous acid at around 3:00. Adds to the woozy disorientation of the track. Wunderbar.

Finally, but most certainly not leastly, the welcome return of INVŌKER. The track is Churches, which has had support from French legend Laurent Garnier. And you can see why. There’s a bit of his intricate take on techno inside Churches. A track that offers a mesmerising groove that floats along the house and techno borders. Acid lines wibble in the background and the overall effect is quietly moving. A track that’s ever-shifting, twisting patterns of sound are like waves incense around to offer a proper overwhelming effect on the senses. Dearly beloved, the collection plate is coming round now. Don’t forget to make a donation.
