The first batches of postal votes have delivered Boothby and Wentworth to the Liberal Party today and the Coalition now have 75 seats. They still lead in Bass which could be the 76th seat and majority government.

Politics is often about expectations. Tonight's seat numbers are almost exactly the same as in 2016. Then it was worse than expected, this time it is better. And doesn't that change the speeches.

For all the commentary about party involvement in postal voting, a large and growing number of postal votes are due to voters applying directly to the AEC (the number of party PVAs in 2019 will likely increase closer to the election as they're slower to get to the AEC).

I'm pretty sure that Geoff Scully, the UAP candidate for Newcastle, is a martial arts instructor rather than what is published on the UAP website. But perhaps as an ordained Minister, the current version is the correct one.

Forgot the link on this. If you have a spare half hour, 's RearVision program has an interesting half hour piece on the Senate and state upper houses featuring Anne Twomey, Paul Strangio and myself.

This United Australia how-to-vote for the ACT is baffling me. It recommends a third preference for the ungrouped column. That is impossible as there is no above the line box for the ungrouped column!

This blog post related to the 2015 Queensland election, but it includes the relevant case law on whether a disqualified defeated candidate can be the basis for a Court of Disputed Returns challenge

Here's an old post I wrote in 2013 on what happens when a candidate is disendorsed by a party. The answer is, they are still on the ballot paper and they can still receive votes.
