’And of those who have managed to land new jobs, only a minority – 45 per cent – were hired on a full-time permanent basis. Many had been through one or more jobs since their retrenchment, the research found, while angst over "job insecurity" and financial pressure was rife.’

‘The research has tracked hundreds of workers since the plants closed. It found that 12 months after the last closure in October 2017, one in five of the laid-off employees who wanted to continue working was jobless.’

‘Soon-to-be-released research commissioned by the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union for the first time has evaluated the long-term employment outcomes for the thousands of staff retrenched from the automakers and supply chain.’

The same problem the Democrats are facing. We may be the home of small L liberals. But we are not the home to 67% of other voters.

‘Mette’s explanation for that decline, pitched at working class voters, has been “you didn’t leave us; we left you”. She has won not by ditching core values but by returning to them.’

‘Following her success in the Danish elections, Mette Frederiksen is set to return the Social Democrats to power. This contrasts starkly with such parties’ fate elsewhere in Europe: the long melancholy roar of an ebb tide.’

This is excellent by ⁦⁩ I’d only argue it a crisis three decades in the making. Labor’s federal HoR primary vote cracked in 1990 when it falls below 40 per cent for the first time since the great depression split.

The GST 1993 election is a reprieve and nothing more - Labor’s primary bounces up 5 points, but then in 1996 it dives back under 40, lower than 1990. Labor is going down the path of European social democracy.

‘The party is dealing with a reckoning of its base, its tactics and its vision. It has three years to work out what it stands for or it will face its longest period in opposition since Robert Menzies was prime minister.’

Interesting election result out of Denmark. The country’s social democrats have won back government running a left agenda on protecting the welfare state but pivoting to the right on immigration.

If only we had a federal govt with a plan to grow the economy & wages beyond building car parks. ‘The economy grew by 1.8 per cent over the past year, its weakest performance since September 2009 and the poorest result since the global financial crisis.’

Retail sales down, 10000 jobs axed by Telstra, residential building approvals down, house prices still falling, below-target inflation, stalled wages, interest rates cut to record low. Now would be a good time for the govt to formulate an actual plan.
