For six years, Julian Assange, who exposed the crimes of the US military and intelligence apparatus, has been imprisoned in London, trapped in the Ecuadorean embassy under increasingly onerous and precarious conditions. Now he has been denied any contact with the outside world, unable to receive visitors, make phone calls or access the Internet. The perpetrators of this crime are not the governments routinely denounced as “rogue regimes” by imperialist powers and targeted for military aggression, but the imperialist powers themselves—principally the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States. The attack on Assange is the spearhead of a drive by the major capitalist governments led by the United States to censor the internet and destroy democratic rights. The 1917 Russian Revolution was the most significant event of the 20th century. The announcement by General Motors in November 2018 of the closure of five factories in North America and the elimination of some 15,000 jobs is a frontal attack on autoworkers and the entire working class. The jobs massacre is the spearhead for a new restructuring, threatening the jobs of millions around the world. Agents: The FBI and GPU Infiltration of the Trotskyist Movement uses archival evidence to shed new light on how the governments of the United States and the Soviet Union spied on and infiltrated the world Trotskyist movement from the 1930s through the 1980s.

Beginning in the 1930s, both governments succeeded in placing high-level agents within the American Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party (SWP). Through their network of spies, the Stalinist secret police—the GPU—were able to orchestrate the assassination of Leon Trotsky, co-leader of the Russian Revolution, in Mexico City in August 1940. The FBI used their network of undercover agents to prepare the conviction of 18 members of the SWP in 1941 for on charges of sedition, under the recently passed Smith Act. In both cases, the infiltration continued well past the early 1940s.
