INFORMATION ABOUT DIFFERENT TYPES OF ENERGY
Will there ever be a time when we can use nothing but renewable energy to power our world. The time may not come but there will be a time when non-conventional energy will be an integral part of our lives. Solar, Wind, Bio fuels,Tidal, Geo-thermal, Fuel Cells, Hydrogen, are various forms of non-conventional energy. Being an energy responsible company, Bharat Petroleum has made strides towards harnessing renewable energy in a big way.
Biodiesel Fuel can be produced from a variety of natural crops including rapeseed, soyabean, mustard, flax, sunflower, canola, palm oil, hemp, jatropha and waste vegetable oils. The latest to the list being Tobacco. This fuel source is said to reduce engine wear and produce less harmful emissions. BPCL proposes cultivation of 1 million hectares of Jatropha in U.P. (read about our 1-1-1 plan in our website www.bharatpetroleum.in)
The Sun offers more energy than we can consume. However, tapping solar energy is an expensive proposition. In alignment with global solar energy efforts, Bharat Petroleum is working with the Punjab State Electricity Board to ensure that better economies can be obtained. A 1 MW solar farm is proposed to be built in a JV with PSEB.
Modern day wind farms are the result of exploring potential and extensive R&D. Wind farms comprise many thousands of windmills (each capable of generating up to 2.5 MW power) placed in wind tunnels (High wind speed areas). BPCL has 2 windmills in Karnataka that generate 5 MW of power and are connected to the national grid.
Hydrogen is not an energy source, but an energy carrier because it takes a great deal of energy to extract it from water. It is useful as a compact energy source, especially in fuel cells and batteries. BPCLhas experimented with hydrogen fuel to develop technologies that can efficiently exploit the potential of hydrogen energy in our LPG bottling plant in Bangalore.
