Paul Blackthorne and Willa Holland Talk Arrow

Arrow is back tonight, and most of our favorites are back — including Willa Holland (Thea) and Paul Blackthorne (Detective Lance). We had a chance to catch up with both actors at San Diego Comic-Con in July, just as they were starting to film the new season. Here’s what they had to say about the beginning of Season 4!

Detective Lance

Good news, guys! Lance’s heart condition is no longer an issue. Now, he has time to focus on other things. According to Blackthorne, Lance will do anything to protect two things: “The two most important things in his life … are his daughters and his city. And he’ll sacrifice his reputation and his career for either of those, really. As has been evident. So, if questionable decisions have to be made that may compromise his character or his reputation, then he’s willing to do that if the beneficiaries are either his daughters or his sister. He’ll take it on the chin.”

Might we expect some “questionable decisions” from Lance in season 4? We’ll have to tune into the premiere to find out.

Thea Queen

Thea underwent a transformation last season on Arrow, and the consequences continue to play out in season 4. Though Willa couldn’t go into any details about the effects of her swim in the Lazarus Pit, she did say that Thea has found “purpose” in her life as a crime-fighting superhero.

When asked if Thea would have any kind of public persona this season, Willa said: “I think, now that she’s found a bit of a purpose inside of her, she’s just gung ho about it right now. [Crime-fighting] is the only thing on her mind, getting that rush out there and doing something that feels like she has a sense of purpose.”

As for Thea’s relationship with father Malcolm, Willa said she didn’t “see them becoming nice father/daughter anytime soon,” but “there’s definitely always the option.”

As for other interactions, in particular the dynamic between Thea and Felicity, Willa speculated that they would be getting more screen time together this season, saying: “I definitely think since they’re the two most important people in Oliver’s life, I mean I don’t see any reason why not.”
