  3. Silver pocket watch, c.1650. It’s engraved with the Latin phrase which roughly translates to: “Remember the hour of death is uncertain.” This memento mori prompted people to think about the shortness of life. It is now part of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England.

(1/10) THREAD 👇16 February 1914: it was a wintery night when Theresa Hollander’s father discovered her body near a shed in St. Nicholas’s Cemetery. The 20-year-old had been brutally beaten to death. Theresa’s eyes were wide open, her hands clutched in frozen agony.

Spooky goodness from : some doctors believed the retina could capture the final moments before death, and tried to identify murderers through the dead eyes of their victims.

Quotes like these and 'the good die young', always make me envision a 98 year old lady with a fag in one hand and a whisky in the other going 'eff you too then, mate'

Illustration demonstrating the removal of a breast from 1675. This operation would have been performed without anesthetic. This was not only incredibly painful, but incredibly dangerous as it was done in an era before people knew understood germs. Image: Wellcome Collection

Head of the Italian anatomist Antonio Scarpa, who had a reputation for ruthlessness. When he died in 1832, his assistant Carlo Beolchin performed an autopsy, removing & preserving the head as an act of revenge. It's on display at the Museo per la Storia dell'Università di Pavia.

  18. My friend is an incredibly talented historian. Her fourth book is coming out this summer, and people have criticized her for being TOO PRODUCTIVE. Honestly, the internet is a garbage dumpster of a place at times. It’s not hard to be kind & supportive.👇

  21. (10/10) But what of Theresa Hollander (pictured here)? Unsurprisingly, the removal of her eyeball revealed nothing that helped the case against her ex, who was tried not once, but twice, and found not guilty on both occasions. Theresa’s murder remains a mystery to this day.
