Jackson is the capital of and the largest city in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is located primarily in Hinds County, serving as one of two county seats there; segments of the city overlap Madison County and Rankin County. Jackson is on the Pearl River, which drains into the Gulf of Mexico, and it is part of the Jackson Prairie region of the state. The city is named after General Andrew Jackson, who was honored for his role in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 and later served as U.S. President.
The current slogan for the city is "Jackson, Mississippi: City with Soul." It has had numerous musicians prominent in blues, gospel and jazz, and was known for decades for its illegal nightclubs on the Gold Coast; one site has been designated for the Mississippi Blues Trail.
The city is the anchor for the metro area. While its population declined from 184,256 at the 2000 census to 173,514 at the 2010 census, the metropolitan region grew. The 2010 census ascribed a population of 539,057 to the five-county Jackson metropolitan area.
Union Station is an intermodal transit station in Jackson, Mississippi, United States. It is operated by the Jackson Transit System and serves Amtrak rail lines, Greyhound Lines intercity buses, and is Jackson's main city bus station.
Train service first came to Jackson, Mississippi in 1840, when the Clinton and Vicksburg Railway established a connection. The city became a more prominent rail hub after the American Civil War as a stop for what eventually became the Illinois Central Railroad. The modern Georgian Revival station was built in 1927 by Illinois Central when the rail lines were rebuilt through downtown.
After years of disuse, in 2003 the City of Jackson purchased the building from the Canadian National Railway, the successor to Illinois Central, with the intention of turning it into a multimodal hub named Union Station. The city undertook a $20 million renovation funded by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act and the Jackson Redevelopment Authority; Dale and Associates were chosen as architects. The city converted the building into the Jackson Transit System's primary bus station and added facilities for Greyhound Lines. The former freighthouse was converted for use by Amtrak, and other areas of the building were redesigned for commercial use. Dale and Associates received a 2005 Mississippi AIA Merit Award for the completed project. It is listed as a Mississippi Landmark.
"Jackson, Mississippi" is a dark southern rock song from Kid Rock's 2003 self-titled album. The song is about a man dealing with addiction and the effects it's having on a relationship. It was released as a dual single in January 2004 along with "Cold and Empty." It peaked at #14 on the Mainstream Rock tracks. A live version was released on the Best Buy exclusive version of 2007's Rock N Roll Jesus. His 2008 National Guard song "Warrior" is a rewrite of Jackson, Mississippi. It uses the same musical structure of the song.

Jed falls in love with June Martin, the pretty dishwasher at the boardinghouse ran by Mother Manning. Steve is also in love with her, but pretends not to notice. Before the wedding, the saw fails again and Jed is killed. Steve hammers the machine to bits in a rage and, after breaking the news to June, flays Whittaker for not replacing the defective saw. To cover up his own negligence, Whittaker accuses Steve of killing Jed out of jealousy and then smashing the saw in an effort to cover up the crime. Steve is jailed for murder. June testifies on his behalf and the conscientious Judge Hanley aids in freeing Steve. The townspeople and loggers still believe him guilty and make him feel like an outcast. A forest fire breaks out and Whittaker, leading a party of loggers into the woods to fight it, manages to get his men and himself trapped by the blaze. Steve, who knows the woods well, refuses to rescue the men, until persuaded to do so by June.
