Affiliate Organizations

NACDL has 95 affiliated organizations spanning the United States, its territories, and the globe.

Affiliated organizations are recognized as such because their mission, goals, and structure mirror those of NACDL, and they are like-minded in their pursuit of ensuring justice and due process for persons accused of crime, improving the integrity, independence and expertise of the criminal defense profession, and promoting the proper and fair administration of criminal justice.

NACDL Seeks Nominations for 2019 Council of Affiliates Election

NACDL is currently seeking nominations from its Affiliated Organizations for two upcoming vacancies on its Board of Directors for seats dedicated exclusively to Affiliate Representatives and will last from (2019 – 2022).

NACDL’s Council of Affiliates is comprised of (4) Affiliate-elected representatives, each with a three year term, serving as members of NACDL's Board of Directors. Because the Council of Affiliates is your voice to NACDL, it is important that NACDL’s Board have energetic and outspoken representation from its Affiliates. Unlike the general election for NACDL's Board of Directors where the membership votes, the members of the Council of Affiliates are elected by the local leadership of Affiliated Organizations and serve on NACDL's Board as representatives of all 95 NACDL Affiliates. Additionally, the Council is tasked with coordinating information and maintaining the relationship between NACDL and its county, city, state-wide, and international Affiliates.

If you know someone from your state organization who can effectively speak on behalf of your local interests, and those of other Affiliated Organizations, you are urged to consider nominating them. Because the elections are fast-approaching, now is the time to consider who your potential nominee might be. Each Affiliate is entitled to nominate one person from their state as a candidate.

Qualifications for Nomination:
To qualify for nomination, a candidate must be a member in good standing with both NACDL and the Affiliated Organization making the nomination. Additionally, the nominee must be willing to attend all quarterly NACDL Board meetings during their tenure except in cases of illness, serious personal/professional difficulties, or official court business.

The nomination deadline is 5:00pm ET, May 17, 2019. All submissions should include: 1) a letter from an Affiliate officer or executive director nominating the individual, 2) the nominee's letter of intent to run for the Affiliate Board seat, and 3) a statement of qualifications written in paragraph form by the nominee not to exceed 700 words. All qualified nominees will be automatically placed on the ballot.

Election and Voting:
IMPORTANT NOTICE:  The election will be held over a 60-day period, preceding the Annual Council of Affiliates Meeting on during NACDL's Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA. Each NACDL Affiliate shall be entitled to cast one ballot in the election. Ballots may be cast electronically, or in-person by an official representative of the affiliated organization, namely the executive director, an executive officer, or by an individual member of that affiliated organization designated by one of its officers. A non-officer designee must provide written documentation from an executive officer of their respective affiliate at the time of voting which authorizes them to cast the ballot on behalf of the organization. Ballots will be counted during the Council of Affiliates Meeting on Friday, August 2, 2019. A plurality of votes cast shall elect two candidates.

NACDL General Election Rules & Policy:
NACDL's Standing Board Policy prohibits any electioneering by candidates, entities, or other individuals on behalf of a candidate. Please review NACDL’s Standing Board Policy on Elections at www.nacdl.org/elections.
