The UK PM @theresa_may called me to offer her condolences and assistance with combatting global terrorism based on the UK experience. I conveyed our appreciation and offered our sympathies in turn for the lives of the UK nationals lost in the attacks.

I strongly condemn the cowardly attacks on our people today. I call upon all Sri Lankans during this tragic time to remain united and strong. Please avoid propagating unverified reports and speculation. The government is taking immediate steps to contain this situation.

In the wake of the heinous attacks in Christchurch, I offer my condolences and support to New Zealand. It is a country with a strong history of peace, multiculturalism, and tolerance, and I have no doubt that its people will not allow this incident to undermine those values.

I strongly condemn the brutal terrorist attack in Kashmir's Pulwama district — the worst ever terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989. I express my condolences to @narendramodi and the families of police officers who lost their lives.

I have instructed all officials to expedite relief efforts to those affected by the floods in the Killinochchi District. The Finance Ministry will immediately commence compensation for those affected. I appeal to the private sector to assist in providing relief wherever possible.

Today marks a victory not for myself or for the UNP. It is a victory for Sri Lanka’s democratic institutions and the sovereignty of our citizens. I thank everyone who stood firm in defending the constitution and ensuring the triumph of democracy.

We trust that the President will promptly respect the judgment of the courts. The legislature, judiciary, and the executive are equally important pillars of a democracy and the checks and balances that they provide are crucial to ensuring the sovereignty of its citizens.

The triumph of democratic institutions over the whims of individuals is the legacy of the good governance agenda. We will continue to defend the sovereignty of our citizens and we stand ready to face elections in a legitimate manner in line with the constitution.

We stabilized the economy amidst turbulent global conditions. By Oct ‘18 we had 0.1% inflation,US$8bn reserves, best ever exports & FDI in ‘17, a primary budget surplus, and growth recovery through Enterprise Sri Lanka and Gampereliya. The economy has since been totally derailed.

The events of this afternoon were not merely a disruption of the House, but an attempt to destroy parliamentary democracy. Thank you to the Speaker, the brave police officers and the MPs who stood firm against threats, intimidation and thuggery to protect the democratic process.

We will now take steps to ensure that the government in place before the 26th Oct will continue. I wish to inform all government servants and police that you cannot carry out illegal orders from the purported government that has failed to demonstrate the confidence of the people.

It is incorrect to say that Parliament was adjourned without a conclusive decision. The Speaker ruled that this purported government does not enjoy the confidence of the House and is illegal. We have further provided a confirmation signed by 122 MPs in favour of this resolution.

The people have won their first victory. Let's go forward and re-establish the sovereignty of the people in our beloved country.
