Madonna, 60, made new album Madame X because she 'had no friends and was depressed' after moving to Lisbon to become 'a soccer mom'

Madonna has revealed that boredom and depression led her to make new record, Madame X.

The superstar songstress, 60, unveiled her latest music video Medellín on Wednesday night in London, and explained that the inspiration behind her forthcoming 14th studio album happened after she relocated to Lisbon, Portugal.

'I didn't go to Lisbon to make a record, that was the last thing on my mind,' she told Trevor Nelson on MTV. 'I went to Lisbon because my son wants to be a professional soccer player and he wasn't going to have the highest level of training in America.'

'So I went to Lisbon to be a soccer mom. That's the last thing you'd expect from a controversial gal like myself.

'I thought it was going to be super fun and adventurous but then I found myself just going to school and picking up kids and going to soccer matches and really being Netty No Mates, and I got a little bit depressed.

'So I thought I've got to make friends and meet people.'

The singer went on to explain how this led to creating new music.

'Most of the people I met were artists - either painters or musicians. And I started getting invited to people's homes and they had things called Living Room Sessions.

'And people would bring wine and food and sit around a table. Suddenly musicians would get up and play instruments. And I was like "wait what's going on here..."'

The pop starlet explained what the title of the album is a reference to, and how the record 'goes back to her roots'.

Via live link from São Paulo, one fan asked the Queen Of Pop if a line in her latest track is what Madame X 'is all about' - the lyrics being, 'Allowed myself to be naïve/To be someone I’ve never been'.

Madonna replied: 'What I mean by that line is naïve in terms of not caring what people think. I feel like when I started my career, as an artist, I was naïve.

'There was a good thing about being naïve because you don’t think about judgment, you don’t think about what people are going to say, or think about what you’re doing, and you’re free and pure in your expression.'

'I wanted to be able to go back to that time in my life when I was just starting out in New York and I didn’t care what people thought and my music really came without listening to all the noise or recommendations or suggestions, or whatever.

'That is also the time in my life, when I was 19, when I was given the name Madame X. So the whole story comes full circle. Madame X is back to her roots, okay? She doesn’t care. Zero you-know-whats.'

Madonna also took questions from live feeds in New York and Milan, as well as from the London studio audience.

The various global connections, however, became a little confusion for the pop star, who regularly remarked that the sound delays were not the best method for a seamless interview.

Madame X is slated for a June 14 release and, as well as Medellín collaborator Maluma, featured contributions from the likes of Diplo, Migos’ Quavo, Rae Sremmurd’s Swae Lee, and Anitta.

Again, sound delays caused a stifled chat between the two, which Madonna branded 'the most boring conversation I have ever had with him'.

It is thought Madonna will perform the new track with Maluma at Eurovision 2019 in Israel on May 18.
