this is really important news for anyone who still thinks that racism is just a wishy-washy prejudice that comes from ignorant people's hearts....racism is structural and institutional. more institutional apologies should follow.

A frighteningly astute reading of TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN, & its obsession with elaborate fantasies of identity & endlessly split selves, by Tim Kreider. The message: you don't know yourself.

but I do think our personal autonomy & decision-making about what we buy & wear is impacted by forces beyond ourselves 😉 & that associating our selves closely with brands, & thinking of our selves as brands, is a weirdly internalised psychological manifestation of market forces

...as well as an examination of how activewear is just one newly created, gendered market of niches that creates & manages women's anxieties about our appearance & femininity. take-home message: wear what you like! wear leopard print croptops! i don't care! 👟👟👟👟👟👟👟👟👟👟

some interesting responses to my activewear piece. my essay wasn't designed to be judgmental of people's personal choices, but a cultural-economic analysis–blending research & thinking–into how decisions by marketers frame our own decisions...

Wow read this. A psychotherapist says since his male clients have been admitting to manipulating & coercing women. They have absolutely no access to or understanding of their own feelings because they’re so disconnected & cloaked in toxic male shame

Activewear as emblematic of late capitalism: v. readable, v. illuminating, but now not too sure what to do with my singlets.

It also relates to that recent Film Twitter blowup about MAD MEN. Don Draper's an anti-hero, an antagonist. He's not aspirational. Stories shouldn't adhere to one ideology or be a moral benchmark for our own behaviour. It can get to the weirder sadder edges of human psychology.

Wrote on one of my favourite films of the year, DRAGONFLY EYES. A Chinese conceptual artist shows us our future, with a spooky, anxious film stitched almost entirely from surveillance footage scooped from the net. It’s a really staggering work.

Extremely into this convo. Art doesn’t have to be a roadmap for how to live, it doesn’t always have to be representative of how we live, it doesn’t have to strive for realism. There’s space for art that appeals to the repressed, the taboo, the forbidden

Wonderful to see Orson Welles' TOUCH OF EVIL on the big screen at Auckland's Academy Cinema last week: fascinating to see the longer trajectory of the US's borderlands anxiety about Mexico playing out through cinema history. Really worth revisiting given the politics of now.
