  1. This is a common misconception. India regained its sovereignty on August 15,1947. However, India as an entity—even a nation—dates back to antiquity. India isn’t a ‘treaty nation’ like many European states. It is founded on a civilisation. The only equivalent is robably China.

  2. The release of Praveen Tiwari’s ‘The Great Indian Conspiracy ‘ in Kolkata was an occasion to discuss the false ‘Hindu terror’ narrative. Thank you ⁦⁩ for hosting such a discussion in a city where debates have been woefully one-sided.

After their polling in early phases, many BJP workers have moved to campaign in states where voting is in 6th & 7th phases. It is curious that similarly placed Congress & Opposition leaders are taking a holiday, some overseas. This tells a story of different levels of motivation

This is why you see so few BJP and Modi display boards in West Bengal. This is the grim reality of TMC raj.

With EC and central forces doing a good job ensuring free polls inside booths in Bengal,TMC goons have shifted tack. They are now threatening potential opponents to not go to the polling stations at all. This is their feeble last stand against the power of democracy.

What I find interesting isn’t Mamata’s angry outburst but that villagers taunted her by chanting ‘Jai Sri Ram’. Increasingly, Jai Sr Ram is becoming the slogan of defiance and change in large parts of W. Bengal. Something is happening that is more profound than mere vote politics

.⁦⁩: This election is clearly dominated by Modi. In most parts of India, he has transformed a parliamentary election into a referendum on his leadership that incorporates a verdict on the past five years and expectations for the next five.

It has been a long and tiring election and it is easy to get lost in the rhetorical clutter and local details. An aggregate view would, however, suggest that 2019 could be another wave election. My article in today’s Sunday TOI.

Kudos to team Odisha for remarkable handling of natural disaster. All the noise was made by the cyclone but the officials went about doing their work quietly & efficiently. That is what is expected of civil servants.
