I just got called “Geronimo” by an old white man at our blockade, and he said it like an insult.

Turns out, according to one of the comments on the FB page, that the district doesn't even HAVE a graduation dress code policy. So they made one up because the Native students asked.

If white students had anything as culturally meaningful to an eagle feather to wear you sure as hell know that the school district would allow it.

I also cannot see the harm in letting students--any student--express their cultural background on graduation day. Honestly feather bans and graduation dress codes are just an expression of white fragility and a continuation of white supremacy.

This is bullying of Native students and families. This isn't the same as decorating a cap with glitter or fake flowers. This high school and every high school in the United States is ON NATIVE LANDS. They benefit every single day from Indigenous erasure and displacement.

I feel like it's time to stop asking. Just wear it. Show up in your regalia, fly your feathers, let them try and take it off you at the ceremony. If they do, hand them a copy of the American Indian Religious Freedom Act and say you'll be filing a lawsuit against the school.

This is the most effed up "editorial" I have read in awhile, and that says something. It's amazing a single Native student graduated in this district with this kind of rampant anti-Indigenous racism from its leadership.

"Lumbee Tribal Council truly wants to show its pride and appreciation to its graduating students for their achievements, then it should hold a special ceremony of its own, among its own — much like many churches do for its graduating members."
