The Traffic Offender Intervention Program is a driver education course run by organisations such as Police Citizens Youth Clubs across the state.
It aims to educate drivers about driver safety in order to prevent dangerous and reckless driving practices. It also aims to help participants understand the risks involved in speeding, drink and drug driving, driving whilst fatigued and other dangerous conduct.
The Program can be beneficial if you have been charged with a traffic offence such as drink driving as it can help demonstrate to the court that you have taken a positive step to address your dconduct.
The relevant court will normally be provided with a certificate of completion at the end of the Program, which will be taken into account when the magistrate determines your sentence.
If you have been referred by the courts to complete the Traffic Offender Program, or if you are considering taking part of your own initiative, you might be wondering what it involves.
The Program consists of a number of education sessions, each of which normally runs for 2 to 3 hours and seeks to teach you about the potential consequences of dangerous driving.
For example, you may learn about how alcohol and drugs affect your driving ability, how the law and road rules operate, how emergency services deal with road trauma, and so on.
Guest speakers and presenters, such as lawyers, police officers, emergency services personnel and victims will provide an insight into the consequences of risky conduct on the roads.
To complete the program, you will be required to attend every session and undertake ‘assessments’ for each session. You will also be asked to write a personal reflection at the end of the Program, an exert of which will often be provided to the relevant court.
Generally, the program runs for a total of 12 to 16 hours, spread across 6 to 8 sessions and weeks. There are also intensive programs which can be completed over one or two weekends.
Aside from teaching valuable driving skills and positive driving behaviours, the Traffic Offender Program can assist you in getting a better outcome in your case.
This is because, at the end of the program, you will receive a certificate to prove that you completed the program.
The certificate will also normally include a personal statement from you about how the program has helped change your driving habits.
That certificate will be taken into account by the magistrate when determining your penalty.
Because participation in the Program helps demonstrate that you have accepted responsibility for your wrongdoing, while showing that you have made a positive effort to change your behaviour, it can help you achieve a more lenient sentence than if you had not taken part,
If you want to find out more about the Program and how it can help you, speak to your lawyer or contact local PCYC.
