FE Bookstore

by

Fifth Estate # 296, January 29, 1979

As you may have noted, the name of our book project has dropped the title “Ammunition” in favor of “Fifth Estate” or simply, “FE.” We have been talking about making the change actually for several years, but were always looking for a snappy substitute. Our feeling is that books are ammunition only in the hands of rulers or would-be rulers as ideology and that the name implies a militancy suggestive of armed struggle that is inappropriate in this context.

The FE Bookstore is located in the same place as the Fifth Estate Newspaper (?) [question mark is in print original] and can be found at 4403 Second Avenue—telephone (313) 831-6800. Our hours vary quite a bit, so it’s always best to give us a ring before coming down.

HOW TO ORDER BY MAIL:

1) List the title of the book(s), amount wanted and price of each;

2) Add 10% for mailing—not less than $.48 (the post office has done it again and raised 4th class—books—mailing rates..$.48 is the cheapest and raises quickly after that);

3) Total (Michigan residents please add 4% sales tax—we’re working on trying to get away from this).

Please write all checks and money orders to: Fifth Estate, and mail to FE Books, 4403 Second Ave., Detroit, Michigan 48201, USA.

CIENFUEGOS TOASTED!

Well we have some bad news. We received a letter last month from the people at Cienfuegos, informing us that the CIENFUGOES PRESS ANARCHIST REVIEW No. 4 was totally destroyed when the truck delivering them caught fire. The entire run of the CPAR (except for a few hundred copies left in London) was surrounded by a ton of margarine and a load of liquid soap—it must of been a mighty blaze.

All of this has left the Cienfuegos people a little depressed, to say the least, but they’re already getting the works back into action and they hope to have the Review reprinted within a few months.

Additional publications

The following publications have recently come to our attention, but are not carried by us at this time:

LAW, ORDER AND POLITICS IN WEST GERMANY; Sebastian Cobler. By far one of the best books written on the situation in Germany and that state’s obsession with security. As far as we know, this book is not available in the U.S. at this time. (It has just been published in Britain and the publishers, Penguin, usually take their time in making their books available over here.) If you want a copy, it’s best to write Penguin Books, Ltd., Harmondsworth, Middlesex, Eng.

OUT OF THE GHETTO: MY YOUTH IN THE EAST END—COMMUNISM & FASCISM; Joe Jacobs. Written during the last years of Joe’s life, the book is both an historical account of the rise of the Communist & Fascist Parties in London’s East End during the 30’s, and an autobiography of Joe Jacobs’ life. A one-time member of the British Communist Party (1930s), Joe was expelled from the Party in 1938 because of his criticism of the CP and its passive stand toward fascism. Since then, Joe was critical of political organization and shortly before his death, he wrote an article against organizations) that appeared in the Fifth Estate last year. Available from: Janet Simon, 29 Troutbeck, Albany Street, London, NW1, England. Price: $6.00 (soon to be carried at Ammunition Books).

People from the Hard Rain group in Cambridge have sent us two good posters in the last several months—one commemorates the 10th Anniversary of the May-June 1968 French uprising and the most recent, says, “Stop The Nuclear Madness.” No prices available but postage ($.50) and a bit for the posters ought to do it. Write: Hard Rain, Box 363, Cambridge MA 02143.

Another pamphlet addressing the question of revolutionary violence has come to us from Australia. Entitled “You Can’t Blow Up A Social Relationship” and with the curious subtitle of “The Anarchist Case Against Terrorism.”

It’s available from Libertarian Socialist Organization, Box 223, Broadway, Brisbane, Queensland, 4000 Australia. $1.
