Cyclone Idai death toll may top 1,000, says Mozambique president

While speaking on Radio Mozambique, President Filipe Nyusi said that “it appears that we can register more than 1,000 deaths” from the devastating Cyclone Idai that hit the southeastern African country four days ago. The cyclone first hit Mozambique's central port city of Beira last week, destroying 90 percent of the city of half a million people.

More than 1,000 Mozambicans are thought to have died in , President Filipe Nyusi has just said, in comments carried on Radio Moçambique. "The Pungue and Buzi rivers have burst their banks, and from the air, many bodies can be seen floating," he said.
