We have always made our films independently, instead of getting commissions (and loads of cash) from television broadcasters. Which is great, because it means we own the rights and so we control the distribution - and, after years slogging through festivals and DVDs and cinema releases and internet downloads - we end up with millions more viewers.  But not having a commission, means that raising the money for the films is always extremely difficult.

McLibel was financed by maxing credit cards and living like paupers. Drowned Out's money came from three very generous individuals and for Age of Stupid we invented "crowd-funding", whereby 620+ ordinary people invested and donated more than £850,000 for the production and distribution.
